That sucks to read this might be the last year Bob does this. I've always enjoyed reading and following along. Well if this is the last year our girl Laura will finish it up in style!

Through 8 days - over 120 miles and better than 40,000 feet of elevation gain. And today - Day 9 - looks to be the toughest: Mt. Cedric Wright, with 17 miles and 8700 feet of gain. This competition is just unbelievably grueling . . .

Only 5 participants have managed all the scheduled days and peaks so far, including - you guessed it - Laura! She became the first woman to complete 7, and then 8 days of the Challenge. Way to go MooseTracks - we're proud of you!

Bob Burd's daily updated scorecard can be found here . Very interesting reading.

Laura completed Day 9 yesterday, summitting Mt. Cedric Wright. Almost 9000 feet of gain, after 8 previous days putting in over 40,000 feet. She described it as a "brutal" 9th consecutive big summit day. That description, coming from her, sends shivers down my spine. This is definitely big boy/girl competition!

The handful of hardy souls who complete all 10 peak days will have put in well over 50,000 feet of gain in treks totalling about 150 miles. Think about that number for a minute - that's more than 10 miles straight up (and I'm sure their knees felt the 50K' of loss as well coming down). The stamina and strength (and determination) to do this thing is just mind-numbing. Hit the trail early to climb hard and high for 10-11 hours, have dinner, soak the feet and pop some Advil, move on down 395 to the next trailhead, grab some shut-eye, and do it all over again - for ten consecutive days! Hats off to all you beasts!

Assuming Laura bagged Mt. Morgensen today - after all, it was a mere 6000 feet of gain in a 10 mile RT from the Portal - that would give her all ten challenge peaks. The most any woman has ever completed prior to this year is 6 of 10, according to Bob Burd. I don't know how to express the appropriate congratulations she deserves, but I'm sure a derivative of "epic" belongs there somewhere.

Laura, I have a ten year-old girl with me (whom you may know smile ) who wants to send a brief, heartfelt message your way on this finale day of the Challenge: "MooseTracks, you ROCK!!!!"

And I think that pretty much says it all!

Here's a photo of 5 on the summit of Mt. Morgenson from near the summit of Mt. Whitney this morning at about 10:30. There was one speed demon on the summit about 20 minutes earlier.

I'd have cropped it if any of my photo editing software was working right now.

Quote from Bob Burd off summit post "Special mention to Laura Molnar for climbing all ten Challenge peaks and placing 4th for the Yellow Jersey"

I make a motion for the Yellow Jersey to officially be changed to orange! All in favor say "AYE". HEHE! grin

If Bob holds another one next year, he should have a new jersey for "Queen of the Mountain".

This competition would have been insane still had it been 100% trails, but throw in miles of cross-country day after day after day, it takes a toll on you. Yet folks are doing all the peaks and then some!

Sean O'rourke set a new record for 30 peaks during the challenge. That's an average of 3 peaks/day. Nuts!!!!

I can't thank everyone enough for the emails, posts, and feedback of encouragement during the last two weeks (well, and beyond that!!). I'll be taking some time to process all the pictures, thoughts, impressions, and memories. I hope to be able to share what this meant to me, but I wonder if I'll be able to really convey it. Or if I'm meant to. We'll see.

Thanks again to my Whitney family.

From the luckiest girl in the world, lots of love,

L cool
