There is story going around Bishop that a bear tried to take a bite out of a hamburger that a lady was eating in outside the Portal Store. According to the recent story, the lady had just taken a bite out of her hamburger, was holding it over her shoulder, felt a tug on the hamburger, and observed a bear trying to bite into the burger. Is this a true story or just another mountain fable?

Se non è vero, è ben trovato.
Translation: "If it's not true, it's a good story."
(common Italian proverb)
The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Hi Not much going on in Bishop these days? Could always rerun the Cottonwood Plaza story or why did they let Von's sell gas , Walmart coming to town??
We sell very few hamburgers mostly cheeseburgers and many with bacon so I think maybe the odds are it is a bogus story , now backpacks, bags, right off the tables at the campgrounds and picnic area yes . Thanks Doug

No Doug, not much going on lately in Bishop, but there is probably far less happening in Lone Pine... ha ha. Except for perhaps that long-term building project on Lone Pine's main street...

In today's Inyo Register (August 31st), Doug is quoted about the Bear problem at Whitney Portal. Campground host Thomas Dillard is also quoted: "Dillard said he had heard stories of the aggressive bear actually coming up behind campers and actually taking food out of their hands."
Instead of jumping to conclusions, it might be worth while speaking with Dillard to verify the stories of food snatching bears. Better to get to the source to discover the truth, instead of accusing others of making up stories.
