This will be my first ascent of Whitney from the Lone Pine campground round trip in a day. The distance covered is approx 30 miles. This is my 6th ascent of Whitney this year since early June and my 25th in the past 20 years so far.

I have wanted to hike this route for years and will finally get my chance on October 10. I believe this was the route most took before the Whitney Portal road was built Pre - 1933.I can once again experience Whitney showing me a different view of its beauty and adventure.I plan on riding my Kawasaki ZX1400 from Modesto,Ca on October 8th then spending a night or two at the Portal to acclimatize.

Has anyone done this route before?

I've done it a few times. The first time we cheated by leaving our packs at our Portal Campgound site which was near the trail and grabbing them as we headed to the summit (dropping them there coming down). Then we just ran up and stumbled down with just a water bottle. The next couple times we didn't have a campsite so we went all the way up and down with everything. The trail between the campgrounds is pretty nice and very well maintained.............................................DUG

I remember Rafael doing this hike last year including joining us on our summit hike from the Portals. On the way down he stopped at the Portals and had a hamburger before continuing down to finish his journey at LPCG.

Hi The trail used in the early days is near the bottom of the canyon , follows the stream up to the Portals and then goes north of the waterfall above the waterfall it crossed back to the south ..... You can still see parts of the old trail from the new road and from the old trail you can see parts of the old road. The trail now is the NRT trail higher up the canyon and longer .

Make sure you watch for the face of Whitney to appear about halfway up the canyon this is the best view in the entire area just past this spot after you cross the log bridge look left and follow the side canyon about 200 ' and this will take you to a hidden waterfall. I like this trail!!!! Thanks Doug
