My wife and I are planning a trip to Yosemite New Year Day weekend. We are interested in staying in a Lodge/Hotel at the park and enjoy a couple days of snowshoeing. I just started my online research, but thought you'all could offer some advice for the trip.

The primary information I'm looking for are good lodges/hotels to stay at, the best trails for snowshoeing. I fear all the hotels in the park will be reserved.

any information or tips will be appreciated

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

I LOVE Yosemite! and I know that the lodging options book early, even during the "off-season". I have had luck calling the hotel directly. Of course, the Ahwahnee is the most historic and luxurious, and therefore the most difficult to reserve. The Yosemite Lodge is pretty "local", with many of the guides and rockclimbing population frequenting the place. Camp Curry is pretty "family", with tent cabins. ALL ARE WORTH EVERY PENNY. Call and then call again until you get something you want. As an outside of the valley option...the Wawona can't be beat. Super historic! And you are treated to Tom playing piano and singing in the living room! It is all good!

I got a room at the Lodge. It seems like a good location with hiking/snowshoeing in the valley and driving access to other locations. A little bit $, but it is for a birthday.

Any other advice would be great.

We are currently at the Lodge. We love it. Birch Building, a one story building facing the falls. The rooms are much larger than your average lodge rooms.

a light covering of snow coats the valley floor (with ice on well traveled trails) with more snow up past 5800. That is where we put on the snowshoes after postholing a bit. A bit of rain is currently falling and temps will drop close to freezing tonight.

enjoy - its one of our favorite places.
Consider joining the Yosemite conservancy ( http://www.yosemiteconservancy.org/ ) its a donation to a great cause and you get a coupon for 20% off your lodging, there is also a 15% off an outdoor adventure course and many other great discounts.
Sign up for the conservancy mailing list. They will send you great promotional deals like "pay the temp" at Curry Village, Yes, they do have a few heated tent cabins. They also offer a few Lodge promotions - we got our room for $70 this week, take off the 20% and we're looking at $55 a night....sweeeeeet.

We bring our own coffee maker. We heat up hot water in the morning and can make our own oatmeal, tea and coffee before the food court opens. Then we can hit the trail before the crowds.
We also bring a few nice bottles of wine or other "special" beverages. Corkage is sometimes cheaper than re-purchasing a bottle of your cherished old vint vino. If you crave a special late night nibble, bring it with you. Selections are limited in the valley.

As always - be bear aware. =)

Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

If you can't get in ay a lodge in the park, there are 2 charming places in Fish Camp. The Narrow Gauge Inn and Tenaya Lodge. Narrow Gauge is quaint but has a restaurant. I don't have a lot of money...Awahnee is really expensive. But of course in the valley. Good luck and I know you'll have a great time wherever you choose to stay.
