I have heard mixed reports--from there is a bit of ice to climb to none. I have also seen recent pictures suggesting both opinions.

Has anyone been up there in the last week that can provide an updated report? I am thinking of getting the ice tools out this weekend and traveling up that way.

Appreciate in advance any info.

How funny!

I just logged on to ask the same question.

Someone posted pics the other day of the ice falls up the Mountaineers Route. A solid backup plan if Lee Vining fails.

My thoughts exactly--actually our other option is the south side of Lone Pine Peak. Let's see what kind of beta we get.

Pictorial TR from Winter Route, S Face LPP: http://picasaweb.google.com/hamikmukelyan/LPPWinterRouteAttempt?feat=directlink

Alois says the ice, when he's seen it, was in early/mid January around the notch beneath the headwall. There was a nice SP thread on this route recently

Lori, I am dying to know how the ice up at Lee Vining was. I am heading up in a week and a half and keeping my fingers crossed.

Scott and others,

We had a great time climbing at Lee Vinning. It was pretty warm and we were a bit concerned but we were able to get two full days of great climbing in.

We began on the Chouinard Falls and climbed three different routes. There was not a lot of ice but what was in--was relatively fat.

On Sunday we climbed on the main wall. There are three routes in at this time. We did multiple climbs on two of the routes which provided us with another full day, as those are very long. (Remember to top rope takes two 60 meter)

The approach in was nice--solid snow no postholing. There was no need for snow shoes.

Murphy's hotel has great rooms--don't forget to ask for the climbers discount.

It was a great weekend and maybe the conditions were not perfect but they were definitely good enough and the lack of crowds made it spectacular.

I have posted my facebook link below--I think it will allow you to access my pictures. Unfortunately I did not take a lot (like usual Lee Vinning Ice Climbing ) as I always get focused on climbing and forget the camera.

And on a final note, there is a storm this weekend so conditions can change from one day to the next. I was there Dec 11 and 12.
