According to my friends who live in Mt. Baldy village area, Mt. Baldy village road is closed for public and only open for residents only. Many sections of road have suffered damages by the recent rain storm. The road will be open by Saturday. Please check the road condition before you drive up there. Shin
Update: as of 12/23/2010 7:28 am The Mt. Baldy road is open to the village and visitor center and road is clear. But the road beyond to Manker Flat is closed at the bridge just before the fish pond. No definite date is set for re-opening,yet.
Richard took off to Bear Flat trail. Let's wait for his trail report.

My plans are in the air everybody. For sure this weekend I'm with my family.
Next weekend I"m either overnighting on SG or doing Baldy. I'm leaning towards spending Saturday night in the San G wilderness and summiting on Sunday.....Anyone down?

San G sounds interesting Jeff. Can't fully commit right now but it's certainly worth entertaining.

Richard took off to Bear Flat trail. Let's wait for his trail report. Not quite... The "bridge" across the stream was washed out and I wasn't about to try and cross without... I headed over to Iron Mountain: Great views of Mt. Baldy after I came out of the clouds. Didn't see anybody on top. Took a few panos. The rest of the photos.

According the Mt Baldy ski area website, the road is now open. Anyone know if that is actually the case? Edit - just looked at the SB county website for road closures - seems to be closed for non-residents.

I was up there today. Hiked up Icehouse Canyon. The road was definitely open in the afternoon. It was closed to all but residents in the AM, but they opened it up sometime around noon. The wash-outs in the road have been filled with gravel, so if there are any big rains in the near future they may have to close it again.

The hike from the Bear Flats trail is quite nice if the road closure persists. I summited with a friend on Christmas Eve. You can still get a great workout without any technical equipment since the snow coverage is not an issue until about 7100' elevation. The snow was very wet and kept clumping onto our crampons. My friend switched over to snow shoes, which seem to work better. I only brought crampons and struggled with punching through the snow. Crossing the first of several ridges: About 1 hr away from the summit: View from the summit: Clear enough to see Catalina Island:

We were there on Friday, a day after Richard, and the creek was still high but crossable. It was dark but we went for it. Tracie going for it here: Then on the way back someone put some plywood over the washed out part and it was an easy cross: The rest of the pics can be seen here .

I climbed the bowl yesterday and while I considered it safe, there was evidence of some shallow slides on the west side. Considering today's storm and the predicted low temps and winds following it, I'd use extra caution for the next few days (or more).

Hi Richard,
I always enjoy your pictures and was surprised and pleased to see one of my dog (51 from yesterday's Baldy hike), since I don't carry a camera and have few photos of Anda.
Thanks,
Mac Pigman

Great start to the New Year…..congrats Team WPSMB! Hey Richard is this part of a Cheetos-free New Year’s resolution photo by Shin I tried to get up Baldy yesterday (1/2/2011) and turned around ~9400’ after the spindrift scoured my eyeballs.
