Shin came out to the desert for a couple of days: I made him ride... He later told me it had been over 30 years! ... and climb... Shin near the summit of Five Fingers. ... and ride some more... ... and climb some more... Shin on the summit of Pinky Finger (pinnacle in Short Canyon). ... and get lucky enough to enjoy the beauty of a late-season (for us) storm... Shin heading up the PCT from Walker Pass. ... and enjoy the company of beautiful women... Shin and Cori on the summit of Morris Peak. Tracie and Talus are out of the frame. ... and finish off the trip with a nice easy walk back to the Trailhead. Even I have to admit that the desert is gorgeous at this time of year! More photos are here and here .

Richard -
Noticed in your pics you'd been up Owens recently. Is the road in passable condition for a 4x4 vehicle (I have a Tacoma)?
I was a bit south of your group yesterday - Backus from CA178. Surprisingly cold, but that route is exposed all the way.

I'd say the only requirement is high ground clearance and that may have changed since I was last up there because there was a bulldozer working the road to repair some of the ruts from the storm run-off.

Thanks. Good to see BLM is getting after the road - two years in a row. Last year they stopped about the Magnolia mine turnoff as they ran out of time - apparently they share the equipment rental with the Barstow office. Maybe this year they'll do the section between the old mine and the Owens TH.
Between the BLM and a conservation group, there's been quite of bit work in the southern Sierra west of Indian Wells Valley. On a hike to Deer last fall I visited with a crew who were using the TH at Five Mile as a base of operations.

This Shin Fan is smiling ear to ear... Great pix documenting a phenomenal weekend. I'll bet Shin was glad you made him ride after 30 years. Love the pic of Shin on the summit of Pinky Finger. Looks like he is ready to take off and fly.

Hi M.C. My limitation of hobby is less limited after last weekend. Now I have a friend who has a dirt bike and a powerful 4X4. It is so interesting that we were just talking about flying, hung gliding, sky diving when we had a lunch just below the Morris Peak.
The riding dirt bike took more out of me than hiking Mt. Baldy. Richard wanted to knock off a few more peaks that day but I said NO. If he didn't reach his this year's goal,he can blame me for it.
Since I seldom hike new mountains,I had no clue about the trail to Morris Peak or shape of mountain. Cori,Tracie,Talus started earlier than us so we followed their tracks, at least I did. Richard was a few minutes behind me around near the Morris Peak saddle. I went ahead to catch up with Cori and Tracie. Within a few minutes, I saw them coming back saying they were off from GPS. We walked back together to the saddle and looked for Richard's track heading up to the summit of Morris peak. After 5-10 minutes on the trail, we saw Richard standing on the trail and laughing. He was coming down from the summit. We finally got together as a group and went up to the summit of Morris peak. I learned the lesson that don't walk ahead of a person who knows the trail if you don't know the trail or if you don't have a GPS. Later Tracie told me that her dog,Talus, was sniffing Richard's track earlier. If I went ahead I ended up Mt. Jenkins a few miles away. This is a silly mistake for everyone but it was a good lesson for me.
It was a good escape in the desert with blooming wildflowers and good hiking friends.
See you on the trail.

The two bikes roaring down the road, Steppenwolf ringing in the air. Richard and Shin heading out on the highway, looking for adventure...but I can't figure out who is Peter Fonda and who is Jack Nicholson. Great TR and photos you guys, good times. Can't wait for those wildflowers. I wonder how Talus will like those?

Haven't forgotten. But who is that giving Shin a ride back to the trailhead? James! This is classic!!! Shin, Richard and Cory, thank you for sharing the day with me. It was really pretty scenery and nice to have a relaxing hike on a blustery spring day. Apologies for the exuberance of the puppy, she just loves to be out on the trail!

Hi Ok so we did a few talks about Whitney , Jack and Betsy did the power point I would glance at the screen and make up some story about the location, one of the last shots was this clown on thge summit talking on a cell phone , one night I looked and thought I know that guy, but who is it. He had on a hat and looked serious about something. Then it hit me Jack had set me up.
Back in another life I was one of those motorcycle riders, Earlene made many of the rides. Life was interesting during those years. We built bikes and did engine work and spent many hours talking with social control agents on different topics. These were the days before the Honda Dream and family rides on Sunday.I think some of the people we rode with didn't vote or buy war bonds!
James I don't know how you did it but stands as one of the best tricks next to the Portaland Castle shot Jeff did. Thanks Doug

I haven't been able to stop laughing.....
That has to be one of the best bits of photo manipulation I've ever seen.

That has to be one of the best bits of photo manipulation I've ever seen. Manipulation! Say it ain't so. I am pretty sure that all James did was clean up some bad spots on the picture I posted, making it easier to identify the guilty. We should not tolerate photo manipulation beyond such routine cleanup. If we allow doctored photos, people will start denying the summit Starbucks. Whitney tourism will die without it.

Doug, you are a walking Great American Novel, I want to hear some of those stories. "Social control agents"...LOL In some circles they call these tricks "PFM" (Pure @#$@#$@ Magic). I am humbled and honored to have Jeff mentioned. He truly is the Obi-Wan Kenobi PFM guru.

See you on the trail. Hi Shin So next you will be flying or sky diving... or maybe even hang gliding off a mountain. I went tandem hang gliding off a mountain in So Cal back in '86. This guy had been teaching hang gliding for 15 years and I felt very safe. I look forward to seeing you on the trail. And we will definitely car pool together again. Next time I drive and you are not allowed to pay for gas.
