This gulley between Poopout Hill and Southfork Meadows avalanches almost every year, but it's not from Jepson.

Thanks, Mike. It's been awhile, and I didn't bother to look at the map, and you're right.

I was under the impression that this was a "every ten year" type of thing. I've only been up there a couple of times in winter, and this was the only one of these I'd seen.

Thanks for the clarification.

Hey, I'd edit it to take Jepson out, but it won't let me. What's up with that?

There is a very narrow window in which one can edit/remove posts.

on the topic of the tram-----I HATE THE TRAM. To me, it's a travesty that it exists, right in the middle of a pristine forest and nature preserve. it couldn't be more out of place. How could anyone have installed an amusement park ride in the middle of the wilderness?
i realize that more tourists use it than outdoor-types, and i would guess that more rescues have to be made because the tram allows people who shouldn't be in the rugged outdoors access to areas that are beyond their capabiliities---
DO AWAY WITH THE AMUSEMENT PARK RIDE IN THE WILDERNESS!!!!!!!!

Wow, that's pretty extreme. There are a whole lot of mountains in wilderness totally inaccessible to people who are not heavy-duty hikers.....you don't think it is reasonable to have ONE that less fit people, or disabled people, can access? Personally, I think that a disabled veteran is a worthy American, too, for example.

Protection of wild lands is a political decision. Politics means votes, and priorities of resources. If no one ever gets access to wild lands other than the zealots like us, we are a VERY small minority, who are typified as extemists and treehuggers out to steal access to the lands owned by Americans, from Americans. As fewer and fewer people access these lands, there become fewer and fewer VOTERS that find them to be worth supporting....and find them to be a good place to build condos with great views. This is why making people hike into Yosemite would be an equally bad idea.

A tram on San Jacinto may be something that does more good for wilderness than everything that you will ever do in your lifetime, and that is worth considering.

Well, the cool thing about the tram is that you can go from the desert floor to a beautiful forest. It's a respite from the summer heat, a place to take your kids so they can play in the snow, and who could ever get tired of hearing that Otmar Liebert tune on the tram, over and over....(just kidding) Lots of folks cannot hike and some can't even drive, so I have to agree that it does more good than harm. Most of the rescues are not caused by the tram. If you don't like the tourists, hike up via Marion Mtn or some other trail.

Regarding the route from the Tram hitting Miller and Jean peaks and back down, do you have a route on that suggestion? Is it fairly straighforward?

I just realized I didn't have an adequate map of the area near either peak to look at this option, so I just ordered one with better detail.

RAC,

Sid Davis is the route to the summit in the winter. It is direct as can be. The best GPS reading I have gotten is 2.9 miles to the summit. There are a couple of drainages that will put you Long Valley but most of the tracks will put deep in the middle Sid Davis.

E-mail me at through my website, if you want our GPS track from last weekend. It's a JPG of Garmin's Mapsource.
