Whitney, Langley, Olancha and others.

Still haven't gotten high enough to worry about AMS, but I finally had a line of sight to Mt. Whitney, with OK skies.

Too warm weather... Still loads of snow... I'm only sweating, not post-holing...

No, I'm not sorry I'm not up there.

Richard, do you know how high you got?

BTW, missed you at the show. I added a special slide for you:

Bizarre Characters of Whitney

Hike along Pete
Barefoot Ted
Jack Northam
Doug Thompson
Richard Piotroski

Which gave me an excuse to talk a little about each of them.

Thanks for the mention. Sorry I missed it.

Is Ranger Bob too normal to warrant mention in the cast of Bizarre Characters?

The photo was taken from the summit of Chimney Peak. Depending on the source it's only 7994, or 78-something.

Thanks for sharing your view from Chimney Peak.

Here are some of the peaks in your photo:

Pretty good view with Mount Whitney 51 miles away.

Thank you, Wayne (for those of us who just have to know everything about everything)

Hi The name of the sub peak to the lower right is Los Vacas also known as the small hill . Looking back from Whitney it would look like "chicken"

Wayne still waiting for the inverse from the Soda Springs to Whitney , scaled about 30 miles ??? Thanks Doug

Thanks Wayne. It's cool to see it labeled.

Dang Doug, now I'm going to have to get to the other side of the "chicken hill," so I can see it for myself.

Doug, you being the surveyor, I think it best to reverse the inverse back to you!

Wayne, in the picture, do you know the name or location of the peak just to the left of center, with no snow?

Ken, according to my peak list, it appears to be Ball Mountain (9,256') at 14 miles away from Chimney Peak.

Richard's photo covers a 13 degree field, from 343 degrees True North to 356 degrees TN. Crag Peak is at 340 degrees TN, or 3 degrees out of the photo, and it is 18 miles away. Good guess though, Matt.

Tom Brown? That's a good one Richard, but I do not know where it is. It is not listed among USGS peaks.

There's a Brown Peak, or Mountain, up in the Monache Meadows area. Thinking about it for more than a few seconds, I don't think it would be visible from Chimney because it's not very high and there are a lot of peaks in between that would block the view.

I like renaming peaks after people I know. I seem to remember them better if I do.

Richard, I found Brown Mountain. It is 28 miles away, but it is blocked by the foreground mountains. It is below and in the same line of sight as Mt. Whitney, but blocked from view.

Wayne, that is MOST helpful. I'm involved in a trail project in the area, which we cancelled last year due to snow. We're worried about this year, but don't know the conditions. This gives us beta very close to the conditions we'll be in, in a month.

Thanks also, Richard.

Ken, , FYI, the peak in the foreground, on the viewer's left side, between McAdie and Langley in the background, is Peak 8198, 2.8 miles away from Chimney Peak. Ball Peak, of course, is further back to the viewer's right, as you now know.

Got a wee bit closer yesterday, but there was a lot of "haze" in the air, so the photos aren't worth posting. If you're interested, have a look at the album link below.
