I hiked up the Devil Backbone trail to Mt Baldy and then came down the Ski Hut Trail on Sat (Apr 1).
There were very strong winds on all the ridges with northern exposure to the desert and almost got knock over a few times on the slopes of Harwood.

The Backbone Trail only has a few snowy sections with one tricky section at the top of the cat-walk traverse where you have to kick step for about 10-15’. It’s a zero-tolerance place to take a slip.
I hike up & over Harwood and survived the high winds. Met a SAR group at the Harwood & Baldy Col, and I believe they were searching for someone who had an unintended bivy near the summit.
The hike up from the Baldy-Harwood Col is pretty much snow-free on the south side of the ridgeline, but the whole summit dome is covered in crusty hard-pack snow (Microspikes highly recommended).

Saw Shin-san, Phil Brown and others on the hike down to the Baldy Ski Hut.
Lots of folks still hiking up without any poles or Microspikes and are probably expecting Spring-like conditions with little snow. But there is still plenty of snow in the tree-section above the Hut, the whole summit area, and on any northern slope with plenty of slick areas, I would still recommend bringing Microspikes.
No critter sightings today, but lots of doggies.

Here's some current Ski Hut area & Baldy & West Baldy conditions:

BS Combo; April 9 2017
Did my first B/S Combo (hike up Baldy and then climb at least 20 laps at S1 gym) in 2017......WoHoo!
Started with a hike up Baldy via the Ski Hut trail. The conditions were very nice with just a mild breeze and some over-cast on the summit.
The early morning slick snow conditions still require Microspikes in the tree area above Piton Rock and the whole summit dome.
It must have rained on either Friday or Sat, and left some rhyme ice clinging to the rocks and bushes around the summit.
Saw lots of Mt Baldy regulars including Baxter dog & parents, Julia, Massoud, Dick, Randy, Mac, Pavel, and lots of other hikers.
After Mt Baldy, I drove down to Santa Ana and climbed 20 laps at Sender One gym with the help of Shin-san.

In other news:
A Helo search was under-way on Mt Baldy, apparently looking for Sam Lee.
As I understand, Sam did not return from his Friday hike up Mt Baldy.
Hoping for the best!

Oh, no. I didn't realize it was Sam they were looking for. Sam has more shortcuts than anyone. If he's down and hopefully waiting for help, he could be in any number of places.

I just spoke with SAR to let them know about Sam's penchant for taking shortcuts. They are sending me a map which I will mark up with a few that I know of, but if anyone has any suggestions on some of his shortcuts, please reach out to me.

Brent, not sure if it's helpful, but we saw him on the ridge shortcut here two weeks ago.

According to KPCC, Sam's body has been found on the north side of Baldy. No more info on just where or why he was there.

Goodbye Sam. I always knew l would meet you when l was going back down and you were on your way up. (Sam was a fast hiker but he started late.) My respects to his family.

It was a beautiful day to go up Baldy on the ski hut trail. There was some snow in the trees, more on the last stretch up to the summit. Most people weren't using spikes. I went up without but put them on in the snowy areas coming back.

There is a big Sam Kim - sized empty space on Baldy. It will take a while to get over expecting to see him around the next curve.

Yes Saturday was a beautiful day for a hike up Bear Canyon Trail. It was my first time up this season and I always forget how hard this trail is! There was snow for the last mile and a half to the summit and I saw a lot of people without spikes trudging through it. I put mine on and it was much better. Must have been 40 people on the summit. Ski hut trail looked busy. Definitely thinking of Sam! Most of the snow should be gone by next weekend I think.

Trail condition:
I hiked Register ridge trail to Mt. Harwood, Mt. Baldy, West Baldy, back to Mt. Baldy yesterday.
https://goo.gl/photos/SJR54JorHJRrYCwr6
There was no places to use microspike or any other winter gears even though there were several snow fields on north side of mountains.

The trail was nice and dry. We will have a great "Climb for Heroes" hike this weekend.

It was very nice to see PhilB. on the trail.
See you this Sunday.

Hi all, just a beautiful weekend up in Baldy country. I hiked Bighorn and Ontario on Sat, and Baldy scree hut trail on Monday. Just gorgeous conditions! I'll be up there all summer training for Whitney and Halfdome and I hope to run into some of you there. Happy Hiking!

Another beautiful day up the Old Baldy trail! One highlight was I got to see Shin and Rick on the summit. The trail is in great condition BTW. This is a great training hike for me, I have Half Dome and Whitney coming up over the next 6 weeks.

Hi Dan,
It was very nice to see you at the summit.

Rick G. was doing his Baldy 6 peaks hike of 20 miles last Saturday.
I met Mr. Don Villejo on Register Ridge trail in the morning.
He is 89 years old!!! I met him on RRT last year, too. He is the oldest Mt. Baldy regular I know of.
We are still very young!!

Good luck on your Half Dome hike and Mt. Whitney hike this summer. You are ready to go any time.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Shin thx for your encouragement, it means a lot! So the 6 peaks Rick was doing were West Baldy, Baldy, Harwood and the Three T's? I think he told me he did that before. Anyway hope it doesn't rain this weekend and I hope the Register Ridge is mostly intact.
