Anybody know if there's snow in the bowl? From a distance, it looks melted out.

Hi,

I was at Icehouse Canyon yesterday and was able to see the bowl from the Chapman trail. It's pretty dry, except in a few places. Hopefully, we get more snow soon. See the picture below.

Hi Joyce, its amazing how fast the snow melts up there. The weather has fluctuated quite a bit this year. Hopefully we should get some more snow this coming week!

My wife and I are thinking about going up to Icehouse Canyon for a couple of hours tomorrow. What winter 'footwear' would you recommend - snowshoes? crampons? microspikes? At most we'd go up to the saddle, but I doubt we'll make it that far.

Thanks!

Microspikes and poles should do for anything that does not include heading south toward the ECBO peaks. Last week, it was clear until beyond the 3 mile mark. With the million man and woman march every Saturday, I'm sure this trail will be beaten in very early in the morning.

Hi All,

Anyone on Baldy last weekend? Specifically does the
south bowl have much snow. Appreciate any input.

Safe hiking,
Rick

I hiked Baldy on Saturday. The entire hike was in fresh snow. Here are some pics I took of the bowl:

We stayed on the main trail and didn't see anyone going up the bowl, but it looked doable from what we could see. Hope this helps. smile

Went up the bowl on Sunday, 2/10/13. The snow that fell was still powder (not consolidated) and with only about a foot of it, we punched through to rocks with nearly every step. Not good for crampons, but we were glad we had them when just before we topped out in the chute we ascended, we encountered ice. The ice sent one guy onto all fours making his way up and a few others scratching their heads on how to continue in approach shoes. I hate when that happens! cry

With the sun and heat of today and a forecast of much the same for the next few days, i'm sure the current coverage is a mere shadow of it's former self.

Thanks for the input. We didn't go last weekend, but may try to head up there tomorrow.

Ran into Frank multiple times...
Almost the whole Mexico crew...
No Shin... can't remember when I was last up without him.

A couple of photos:

LOTS of melt-off in the afternoon. It's going to be icy after a cold night.

what a bummer...keeping with the lack of winters here in socal. I was there two days after RP's pic above and it was all gone, there was some decent front-pointing possible for about 200 yards in the woods and that was it...meh.

Hi I was down south a week ago and watched the snow clear off the bowl area in about two days I think Friday - Saturday.
The winter up here is a non event , wind, cold and waiting for the next storm , I think Mammoth needs some fresh and hope for a wet late season.Went thru Death Valley this week saw very few flowers , nothing until past Furnace Creek , Salt grass was showing a nice green Park was busy. Thanks Doug

Went up Ski Hut trail with Cat B and Randy yesterday.

We discussed how the lack of base will prevent any snow accumulation this spring.

Tracie,

Great summit photo. Nice job training Talus to take photos! My dog won't even fetch.
