Herbal tea won't do it, eh?

Me and the pup are starting the long drive South now. Here's my hiking partner.

Obviously, if I'm posting and not driving...

Have a good climb and thank a few Hero's for me!

Congrats on 350 Shin!

Congrats on 350 Shin!
I ran into Shin on Baldy back in March. Riley decided he liked Shin's hiking speed more than mine:

Akichow, it looks like your pup and Riley have the same pack.

I snapped some pics of Baldy on my way to work yesterday:

The day before my birthday, last November, when I was a youngster, I hiked the ski hut trail to the top of Baldy. It was no harder than usual; no easier, either. It was my xxx hike to the top - I don't have a count.

Five days later, after I had become an old man of 77, I went up but had to turn back right before the wooden sign above the hard scrabble. (My name for the scree slope, and I'm sticking with it.) I have tried a number of times since then without summitting.

Yesterday, finally, I was on top again. It was a beautiful day on the mountain, cool but not cold. I carried micro spikes but didn't need them.

I met a couple who are training for Whitney. They have a permit for a 3-day trip in August. It was great talking to them. They are the kind of hikers who go up hill with no more effort than if they were walking on the flat. Since they hike on Mondays and I do, too, I expect to see them again.

So with a Friday night snow, with wind, it made for a really nice Saturday hike up R/R to the summit. 22deg on summit 38deg in sun, light wind on summit made for a nice lunch break. Shin saw your car at Manker congrats on another summit another one closer to your goal.

Hi Mark,
You took many beautiful pictures of the day.
I left my car at Manker and headed up from Bear canyon trail to the summit. My friend was training for Mt. Whitney hike this weekend so we took Bear canyon for the distance and elevation gain. It was a super nice hike with moderate amount of snow on the trail. It was a bit windy at some spots. Frank was looking for you at the summit for a while. It looked like we missed each other at the summit.

This will be the last snow on Mt. Baldy this season.

See you on next hike.

Greetings,

This group sounds like a good source for Baldy info. We were hoping to bring a group of first-timers up the Backbone this coming Saturday, 5/3, now we're not so sure, due to the recent storm. Based on your experience, any estimates on when the current snow coverage might melt away enough for the route to be done safely? We, of course, are ready to reschedule if necessary, no rush in the interests of safety. Thanks for anything you might offer.

Mountain Bob,
You can be pretty sure it will "melt away".
Most spring snow storms on Baldy are gone in a few days, Right now the ground is warm, and the winds are drying. If there is snow it would be patches near the summit, you can just walk around it.

Notice the photos with no snow at the Ski Lodge and watch the temperature on:

Hi All,

Melt away it has.. FYI the spring in IceHouse Canyon is running
nicely. Did 3T's yeseterday as a training hike. Someone had removed the Telegraph junction .25 mile summit sign. Another hiker was just replacing it as I got to that point. Is similar
mischevous happening on the Balday trails?? What are the condition of the windbreaks on Baldy. Planning on an overnight
stay next weekend.
Happy Hiking to all
Rik

Did Baldy Ski Hut up and back Saturday. Cool weather and swirling winds made it a great day to do it. Got an early start (6:15) and less than a dozen on the summit at 9:30. All windbreaks were intact then. Good water flow just south of the hut too - crisp, clean and cold from some snow runoff. One patch of white between West Baldy and Baldy.
"Rush hour" appeared to be 7:30-8:30, because it was a steady stream of hikers when we got back to the ridge above ski hut around 10:30. Thinned out to a trickle the last couple miles.

Just wondering on the water supply at the hut and if it is still going strong. Thinking of spending a night or two on top this weekend and don't want to carry water from the car if I don't have to. Thanks for any info.

Congrats Shin-san on tagging Mt Baldy #365 cool

Shin got his 365th Mt. Baldy summit on the Summer solstice (Sat), right around his 10th year anniversary of starting serious hiking back in June 2004. Shin’s accomplishment is an excellent example of training, perseverance and determination. In addition, Shin is the consummate Mt Baldy ambassador, always sharing the good spirit and knows almost everyone on the mountain (which is saying something as there were about half a million folks up there on Sat)
Just think of the possibilities in the next 10 years!!!
Cheers,
RickG

HI SHIN,

I saw the pictures of your 300th summit, you had so many friends show up to join you on the hike. Even a snow storm did not slow them down!!! I think you may need to have the Park Rangers do traffic control for number 400. The lodge may have to bring in a extra cook to feed everyone.

Hi, thank you my friends,
Since I live in Orange county and I am a half day hiker, Mt. Baldy is a very convenient and inexpensive place to get good workout in outdoor.
Mt Baldy offers us a lot of different trails for training for many bigger mountains.
I have met many hikers who shared their experience with me freely. I have enjoyed meeting them and learned a lots from them. I really feel that I am very fortunate to be surrounded by many good friends. I wish I could use my 10 years of hiking experience of Mt. Baldy for other mountains in Sierra in the future.
Thank you all for your friendship.
Shin
