Has anyone ever tried recreating Orland Bartholomew's 1928/29 winter, Mt. Whitney summit and trekk on to Yosemite? I tried 'search' but didn't even find his name in the archives. (ref. HIGH ODYSSEY, 1974, by Eugene Rose)

I, too, read "High Odyssey" and was impressed. What an incredible feat! Especially when you consider it was done solo and over 70 years ago.

It seems others have tried to recreate the trek. Check out the following links:

Thanks Thomas, delightful reading! Yes, I've not only had the book for several years but have read it several times. Bart was quite a guy. Thanks again for the info.

Unfortunately, "High Odyssey" is out-of-print. A search of amazon and alibris shows that a few used copies are available. The book also shows up on ebay every once in a while. It is a must read for anyone who is interested in the Sierras.

I've heard of professional ski tourers doing the JMT a number of times. I was able to do the stretch, with a big variation, from Yosemite Valley to Mammoth. Although I went on snowshoes: I forget how Orland did it. There are groups who ski a portion of the route; no one much has the time for a end-to-end solo, it seems.

There was a magazine article about the feat, although I can't remember when or where. More Sierra history.
