A brief report on the successful day hike that my wife, 14 year old daughter, and I had yesterday. A beautiful day save the heavy smoke from some nearby fire that largely obscured the views from the summit.

We left the portal at 2:45 along with a group who had just had a backpack stolen by a hungry bear (recovered later and returned to the store). A good warning - portal bears are marauding so don't leave your gear unattended for a minute! Summited at 1:45, back to the portal at 8.

The snow patches on the trail have been discussed quite a bit. We found them to be an annoyance but not much more. Certainly the last patch near Trail Crest is intimidating, but very passable with care and nothing but boots and trekking poles.

It was the second summit for my wife and I, first for my daughter. We've never had altitude problems other than general fatigue and lightheadedness. Our regime has been to super hydrate for several days, take ginko biloba (no idea if this helps) and advil, and use a slow and steady pace with plenty of stops for food and water. We acclimate with hikes at Tioga Pass and June Lake on our way from the Bay Area, and stay in Lone Pine (Dow Villa) the night before and after.

One highlight was meeting a seven year old boy and his proud father after their successful summit. Way to go Tyler!

One comment - it was nauseating to see how many morons had left trash and used wag bags on the trail. I picked up two used and abandoned wags on the switchbacks. Would highly encourage responsible hikers to help keep the trail clean by picking up some of the trash left by these idiots.

if they have actually used the wag bag... you would then be safe to kick them in the butt smile

While hiking Mt. Baden-Powell in So. Cal. recently, I came across an idiot carving something into a bench at mile 1. I kindly said "Please don't do that. That was put there for everyone to enjoy, not for you to destroy." I realize I run the risk of someone getting angry at me or even worse, but I believe it is everyone's responsibility to call people out on their destructive behavior.

The idea that someone would leave behind trash let alone their used wag bag horrifies me! It is too bad that there is not some sort of mechanism that could be implemented that would require that all wag bags issued, be checked back in on return from the mountain...say a bar code scanner at the receptacle!! Seriously, it is too sad that this even has to be discussed. I hope to make my first Whitney visit next year and from everything I have read, so many people prepare, train, hope to get into the lottery and it is shocking to me that anyone would take this amazing mountain for granted.

We noticed last week that there is small cavern, to the right of the trail on the last incline just before you hit Trail Camp, that appeared to be a dumping ground for assorted trash. There must have been several dozen used wag bags in there, along with a few crumpled cardboard containers, some cellophane, food packaging and other items. We discussed how this might be a central collecting point by the Inyo staff for trash left at Trail Camp, to be packed down the mountain later.

The next day we ran into a couple of INFS rangers (Brian and Michael), and happened to mention it to them. They just looked at each other with perpelxed expressions - they knew nothing about it. I suppose it's just another hidden trash dump that gives Trail Camp the "ghetto" label in high summer.

Wonder if things were better when the solar toilets were in place. They were not perfect but neither are hidden trash dumps!

Here's a link to the video I took of our trip up. It's about 20 minutes long and has scenes from most major landmarks. I was surprised when I saw it to hear how hard I was breathing as we reached the top!
