Hi dmatt,

Are we entering the period where any snow that falls will not melt till next Spring?

Thanks DMATT! The info you provide is very very valuable!
Me and a friend are going up the MR this weekend then I have another set of friends going up the EB this weekend so we will be very curious to see your forecast for this upcoming weekend. Thanks!

Some afternoon moisture in Mono Pass on Sunday got me to head out, returned Monday to see a nice dusting of Mt Starr and an inch added to an already covered pass. I guess some of 2010's snow will go into 2012.

Luckily for us sometimes dmatt is not 100% right.
For example yesterday we had an ideal weather for Mt.Whitney hiking.

However it was a surreal experience for me not to see even a single tent at the Trail Camp on Monday morning.
Apparently all people were scared off by the Saturday's and Sunday's weather.

In a hindsight I should have taken Microspikes with me.
In case of a late return switchbacks can have patches of ice.

Are the (potential) patches of ice large enough to need spikes yet? I was up there over Labor Day - and hiking up in the dark there were a few icy spots, but no more than a step's worth long. I'm heading back up the 24/25 and would like to pack my yaktrax if they'll actually be useful (or leave them home if not!)
