Why should Everest be the only mountain to have live broadcasts?
I'm going to be trying the Main Trail again today.
We'll see how this works.
Thanks to my sponsors: McDonalds, Wal*Mart, Old Navy.

Up at the Portal. They plowed and sanded the road!

More to come...

Moving rather slow in the new Garmonts.
At the wilderness sign.
Dead calm right now, so most layers are off.

Hi Live from the very nice land fill in Riverside! Richard has hit the tech dead zone just before LP Lake. He should have signal just above Mirror Lake and again near Trail Camp then to trailcrest and on the backside if he hits the ridgeline looking into the Ovens Valley. Jack, Betsy and I made a rescue call from the ridge many years ago.
Ya Richard sent Pictures!and voice, We just got a $450,000 grant to spread the word about broadband and coverage , we could use it as a poster "even in the middle of nowhere for no great reason broadband could make us richer, thinner and younger." ( side note Earlene hit the wrong remote for the TV this morning she just wants a knob you turn by hand to make life better. Doug

Why should Everest be the only mountain to have live broadcasts?
This very topic - the so-called "digital dilemma" of instant news - was discussed by a panel recently at the Banff Mountain Festival in November -
One speaker was a mainline publisher, another a magazine editor, another was a well-known climber-writer, another was my friend George, a published mountain historian & medical physiologist. The publisher punned there are always two stories reported - the first, and the best. My friend George approached the topic from what actually comes first, that is, not the reporting but the observation. In stressful situations (whether Whitney or Everest) the facts may get blurred either on purpose or not. At high altitudes (like Everest or unacclimatized on Whitney) the brain may not work right, so everything is subject to error; observation, interpretation, reporting on the spot, and reporting later. I supplied George the punch line for his talk. Note that this quote is from the highest altitude/hypoxia situation and from the most famous Everest climber ever: Mountaineers have often observed a lack of clarity in their mental state at high altitudes; it is difficult for the stupid mind to observe how stupid it is. George Mallory, Chapters IV-VI, X-XI in Bruce, CG, The Assault on Mount Everest 1922, page 129

I was wondering myself. Richards spot track shows he is moving down, at Bighorn Park now (around 7:30) a long day for Richard.

Last weekend, his Spot was low on batteries on Mt. Baldy. He might have forgotten to get a fresh batteries at Wal-Mart.

Too cold to post. I'm almost back down at the Portal.
Made the summit in about 9 hours. All me above Laura and Jim's boot track. Probably wouldn't have made it if it wasn't there. Thanks.

( side note Earlene hit the wrong remote for the TV this morning she just wants a knob you turn by hand to make life better. Doug You know I like to come up with stupid ideas, so in reaction to the folks that say "No Tech" in the backcountry, I've come up with my "Digital Dashboard" (on the sternum (sp?) strap on my pack: SPOT, GPS, Camera, iPhone, sometimes more.....) The way that I determine whether I've got a signal is to leave a message in the "text message" inbox. The iPhone will nag you with a tone each time it gets a signal if there are unread messages. Some of the places I could have posted match up with what Doug listed. There was also an ODD Signal Bounce on the West Side. (I had a similar thing happen while I was down by Lower Rock Creek. I actually sent a message from down there. Who'd have thought. (It was cold and windy...) I've been joking about changing my name to "CanYouHearMeNow" and adding Verizon to my list of sponsors. (BTW: that's another joke. Ask Ryan about calling me the Wal*Mart Climber.) BTW II: I'll probably do this again on April Fool's Day. The NF is much better for keeping a signal. BTW III: The batteries went dead in the GPS - probably the cold - but the SPOT track from yesterday looks pretty good. I'll be posting some photos in KW's thread soon.

In the Post field, it's the 3rd icon from the left. Make sure the file has a .JPG extension. Here's a link to a post from UBSL: http://www.whitneyportalstore.com/forum/...=true#Post87004I've had a few people state that they were worried about me. Here's a public apology.

"Digital Dashboard" cool idea. Speech recognition software could eliminate the cold hands. Not sure about the wind though.

Everyone was talking about you on Baldy Sunday...mostly how you're back on your Whitney streak trying to finish out the year with maybe 112 or more Whitney summits...you're close.
Well dang sorry the boots are stiff .... Hope they're better now you're breaking them in.
