Gate is closed and bathrooms are boarded up. I generally hike to the ridge south of the ski hut on the baldy bowl and camp there. It has nice views of the city at night without the stiffer winds you get on top. Night time temps now are < 30F. You can get water from the stream by the hut on the way to the ridge or you can find snow to melt for water.
is the camping area closed to walk-in campers also? We are coming from the bay and wont be in the area until 9pm or so. We really just need a spot to pitch a tent overnight so we can hike in the AM.
Thanks for the suggestion for the campsite on the rigge by the ski hut. i will have to check that out sometime.
I asked this question at the ranger station some years back, and they had no problem with someone walking in at that time. You might want to call them directly and confirm, however.
