Woohoo! I got an Email yesterday from the NPS Yosemite Wilderness Office notifying me that I got my permit reservation for the JMT this summer!
I had sent in my application with about 9 different date and trailhead options, and it was my 6th choice option that was issued. I’d hoped for a Happy Isles start point again, but (evidently) they were already all issued for my dates, so I’ll be starting out at Glacier Point, joining the JMT at Little Yosemite Valley. I’ve not done that trail, so it should be interesting. Actually, beings that I’ll be driving down from Washington the day before (takes me about 15 hours to get to Yosemite), it might be nice to have an easy day that day.
My first choice for a start date was July 16th, but I got the 15th… which is actually pretty nice because this will allow me time to go up Half Dome!
It’s going to be a great hike… some of my family members are hoping to join me for a couple of the segments, but the majority of it will be solo. I’ve allowed some extra time in some areas to do some off trail hiking in some of my favorite areas. I’m pretty excited!!!

Laura, I was hoping that you might say that!! Your comment at Rae Lakes (2009) about going up Painted Lady stuck with me - that's one of the hikes I'm planning on doing... wanna join me?

You got it, girl! After spending Saturday spinning my wheels in snow-scree (snee? sno-ree?) and my knee not complaining, I think I might be ready for some good loose rock action. What are you favorite doughnuts? Mmm... coffee and doughnuts on the summit...

Please save room in your huge pack for a small box of raspberry jello to take to Rae Lakes. If you behave yourself you might get to share it with Rosie. Note that it is raspberry and not that awful orange as per the request of your Rae Lakes buddy.

OMG... after a couple weeks on the trail ANY doughnut would be amazing... and with coffee!?!? ... well, you saw how VERY much it was appreciated last time; I just don't carry "luxuries" on long trips. Buttermilk cruellers (sp?) are probably my all-time favorite. I'll give you a call and give you my schedule. I hope it works out for you to join me. Thanks Ernie... I got the jello covered!

Oh, Ernie, you know all I have to do is bring a flask of orange-vodka and Rosie and I will have some fun with George and his wife at Charlotte Lake with jello shots! And, me? Behave? Surely you jest...

So, when will you be on top of Whitney? This is going to be the tricky part because my brothers (the ones you met in October) are hoping to get Whitney day permits so that we can all meet on the summit and hike down together. I'll have to adjust my schedule to their day hike permit but it will probably be some time the second week of August. They'll be sending in their application next week... so we'll see. This new process will be interesting.

I have GOT to hear the JMT stories (want to do it someday). So might as well be a summit party.

Just a quick question on how this works. It seems that you don't have to apply for exit trail quota space for Mt. Whitney if you're coming from the JMT. The Yosemite page on the JMT specifically mentions that a Whitney stamp is not included.
Does this mean that we don't have to hit an exact exit date?
Thanks for clarifying!

When you get a permit for the JMT they do ask for a date when exiting Whitney. However, I think my 2009 JMT was the only time that I came out on the exact date of my permit, the other times I exited the JMT either a day before or after the date on my permit... food supplies run short, problems/delays arise on the trail...a lot can happen on the trail in three weeks. That being said, I think it would probably raise some eyebrows (or worse) if you were off too many days, I don’t know. The day that I'm scheduled to exit via Whitney is the day (Yup, just one day) that my brother has applied for their permit.... we've got our fingers crossed.
My permit reservation is for a Whitney exit. The other benefit to hiking the JMT is that you can request a Half Dome permit without entering the lottery. Their page states "People with wilderness permits that reasonably include Half Dome as part of their itinerary will also receive Half Dome permits upon request and without further competition."
I clarified that with the Wilderness office and they said that it can be requested when picking up the JMT permit.
It's gonna be a great summer on the trail!

Bump...
Two things:
1. A bunch of us, including Doug Sr., are heading up the MR on 08/11 to meet Rosie... if you want to see some fun family bickering, get yourself a permit for that day!
2. At least a couple of us are heading over Kearsarge Pass and Glenn Pass to spend a couple of days (part of) with Rosie on 08/04-05. It will be outstanding! Can't wait to get back in there!

I was finishing my lunch when I read this and started laughing ... I almost spit my Sierra Mist all over the keyboard! LOL! We don't bicker, Richard... we just all have opinions on everything! Seriously, we do have a lot of fun...and the addition of Doug, Richard, Mark, et al is going to gonna make a GREAT day!!

I'll be coming southbound over Glen between 8/4 & 8/6, depending on my knee, so I may see you.
