On October 26, 2003, a twenty two year old female was reported over due
from a climbing trip in the Palisades Glacier area west of Big Pine. She
had recently come to the Sierra Nevada Mountains from the east coast, in order
to expand on her climbing accomplishments. She was climbing solo, and had
planned on a three day trip, exploring many of the peaks in the Palisades area.
On Sunday,October 26, a friend reported to the Sheriff's Office that she was
two days over-due. The initial ground search located her backpack that had been
left unattended since Friday. A journal entry found inside indicated that she
was planning to climb Temple Crag on Friday.
The search was assisted by the Forest Service Helicopter based in
Independence. At 3:30 PM Sunday her body was spotted from the air. She
was on Temple Crag, at 11,500', and had died from an estimated 400' fall.
On Monday, October 27, 2003 top climbers from the Inyo County Search and Rescue
team recovered her body with the help of Forest Service Helicopter 525.
She was flown to Big Pine and released to the Inyo County Coroner's Office.
