I had a request to post some photos of Mt. Russell:

Either I'm holding the camera crooked or the east summit is higher...

Climbing Russell looks interesting. Thanks for the photos. Now can you help me with permits for heading up North Fork Lone Pine on Memorial Day?

Hi iPOD,

For day hiking in the Whitney zone on Memorial Day, there are currently (4/22/2012) 83 permits waiting to be reserved or otherwise claimed. This permit will allow you to follow the North Fork and ascend Mt Russell. Some consider Mt Russell a quicker day climb than Mt Whitney.

To start the process of obtaining this permit, go to the Whitney Portal Store home page and click on the link PERMITS. Then follow the instructions.

Richard,

Thanks for the photos of Mt Russell. Some of us are following the conditions closely in the Mt Whitney area. Your frequent TRs are very useful.

Best wishes, Jim F

You're welcome.

Doing this "stuff" serves as a distraction and tests my memory.

What little creativity I have is working hard to figure out how I can put something together showing the change of seasons on Whitney. I may ask Rosie or Myles for help.

I attempted Russell's east ridge on Saturday (4/21). Substantial snow on the north side of the ridge held me and another party back. It'll probably take a couple more weeks for that to melt off. Judging by Richard's photos the south face might be the easier option at the moment.

The south face is totally boring.

Here are photos of the East Ridge from Saturday (4/21):

Oh hey, btw, if anyone is going up to Carillon any time soon the register needs a container. The regular can has gone missing and the register book is just lying under a few rocks on the summit (no bag or anything). Kinda strange that the aluminum can has gone missing but the book is still there. Perhaps the register thieves are just taking register containers now.

maybe they figure the paper is biodegradable...

Nice photos. Yeah, that's a lot of snow where you'd want to be climbing.

Ya, that's the problem, it's right where you need to go and it's the light unsupportive stuff.

Richard, I’d be more than happy to help you, but Myles might be a better choice if he’s got the computer savvy going. I pretty much just muddle my way thru the programs to get the result I want. There’s probably WAAAY easier ways to edit pics than the way I do it (i.e. your “arrest” shot) but I just keep playing with it to make it work.

The 50th anniversary Mt. Whitney slide show that I had sent you was the first one I ever made… and I thought I was going to lose my mind a few times, trying to figure out how to do things. I probably would have if it hadn’t been for LOTS of calls to my brother Ken (he's my "go to" guy!).

smile But thanks for the vote of confidence! I'd be happy to help if I can.

Rosie

PS: If you haven't started your project before this summer, Ken's going to be in your group for the family Whitney hike this summer... you could pick his mind as well; he's always happy to help.

One can never have too many pictures of Mt. Russell. When did they start requiring permits for North Fork day hikes?

It started in either 2009 or 2010 - we did Russel in 2010 and it was required then. Only wish there was another approach that did not require it.

Has anyone seen the east ridge since Rick's photos?

Has anyone bivied on the Russell summit? It would likely be uncomfortable but there's something interesting about the idea.

No, but:

This would be luxurious by rock climbing standards.

Does anyone know if the register has been replaced yet? I'm headed up tomorrow, but don't care to take the extra weight if it's already there.
