It's always interesting wandering around Costco, sometimes I view the visit as an old fashion "E" tcicket.

Anyway, yesterday at the Santa Clarita Costo store they had SteriPens for $49 plus change. I ended up buying another Mountain House pack of 10 meals for $43.

Paul,

Have you used the steripen before? curious about the
battery life, especially if the temps are on the colder
side ... below 20F? Appreciate any and all input on actual
useage.

Thanks,
Rick

Love my Steripen. Used it, among other times, on two overnight trips up whitney, and a 9 day trip on Kili. Used a fresh set of lithium on AAs Kili, didn't have to change batteries, have used the same batteries in several shorter trips since, still kicking. (I have the Steripen Classic, which takes those batteries, the lighter Steripens take other batteries, which may be harder to replace abroad, and which may not last as long.). But if you get one, practice at home first. Have never had a field failure. I have used it at 20 degrees or less, no problem -- is why I chose lithiums for Kili (the Steripen classic can accommodate a few battery types, including AA lithiums and rechargeables, though you get fewer treatments with the latter). I do think each battery type deliveries approximately the number of treatments the mfr lists as anticipated for each type, at least in my experience.

I am, that said, kind of taken by the Sawyer squeeze filter, no batteries or moving parts, coming in at 3 oz, but don't have one myself. Just seen them in action.

I have a SteriPen Classic that I've never pulled out of the box, but I did make the comment recenty that I may need to start treating Sierra water because of all the fools that think it's OK to poop right alongside the stream/trail/etc... (Thanks to whoever cleaned up the mess at the NF crossing.)

Look at Tenergy Premium NiMh recharables. (I'm sure there are others that are just as good.) I had a pair last for 30+ hours in my GPS recently (specs say 25) and they do OK in cold weather too. Not as good as lithium, but a heck of a lot cheaper. (I think. I've never done an analysis to see how much it costs per charge.)

i have used the heck out of my steri pen..we used it for a 7 day trip around the wonderland trail for 2 peeps and changed the batteries once. i will tell you that they don't act right if the water temp is close to freezing. then you have to let the water warm up a bit.

Hey Rick, like many other products from cameras to gas stoves, when the temperature becomes an issue, the products sleep with me.

I've been using a SteriPen for several years now with no problems encountered. Last year, I spent 24 days hiking in the backcountry.

Oh man... I did NOT want to read this! I haven't filtered water in the Sierra for years and hadn't planned on bringing anything with me this summer...but maybe I'll have to re-think this. Bummer!

My SteriPen has worked great for 4 years. I just put fresh batteries in each time I go out. Costco in Huntington Beach has had Mountain House and SteriPen. This new Costco is the best kept secret. Woops. Words out.
