I'm planning to hike Mt Whitney at the end of this week.
What amount of snow should I expect on the trail ?
Is it possible to drive to Whitney portal (with tire chains) ?
If not, where do you park along the road ? Is it far from Whitney portal ?
Thanks for all answers !
Frederic.

Pictures and posts recently (last weekend) reported 6 inches of snow at 11000 feet and more further up. Bob R.'s photo above Meysan Lake (12000+) feet shows someone knee deep in snow. Stormy weather has been passing through on/ off since last weekend with more coming this weekend. This could end up bringing lots of fresh snow to the area. If you have to park at the bottom of the hill before the road switches back, it can be a long walk (2000 feet elevation gain) to the portal. Things seem to be changing daily up there if you are watching the weather forecast. As far as the road..that depends on how much snow falls before the weekend. Also be careful not to let your car get snowed in up on the road.

Just got back from Whitney,, we got as far as mirror lake, camped out, and came home.. make sure you take snow shoes and crampons. Snow gets pretty deep in some places. Good Luck..

I'm thinking about heading up for a few days. Does anyone have an update on the conditions? I'm sure quite a few people were up for Thanksgiving weekend.
