This is totally off topic for this board but I know there are some people who frequent this board who may be able to answer this question. June Mountain is closing for the winter next season. Technically this is Federal land leased to Mammoth Mountain for use as a ski area during the winter. If they do not open can one hike into that area and do some back country skiing without risking trespassing issues.

Very disappointed about the decision made by Mammoth Mountain in closing June. I have heard that as part of the lease Mammoth is still responsible for security on the mountain if the mountain is open or not. Yes is your answer.It is public land, and if you are not using lift access you can use the land , the skiing off the back will be better in my opinion, over the last few years the negatives have been skied out quickly due to the easy lift access, this will detour a lot of folks. Hope this helps..
