I am bringing a new Audi with low profile tires and larger rims to Whitney this year. I plan on spending a night at Horseshoe Meadows. Can I make it comfortably to the Horseshoe Meadows camping area with this vehicle? Is the road paved all the way to the camping area? I also have a Toyota FJ Cruiser with high clearance that I could bring but was looking to put some miles on the new car.

Thanks everyone, looking forward to summit #8 this year!

It's 2 lane all the way, paved all the way - just watch for rocks on the road and know how much clearance you have!! enjoy - the views are something else!

Last month I counted 12+ BMW's up there, a bunch of Euro guys were test driving them, they would go slow, I would pass, they would take it up to 55+mph and pass me, then pull over and put computers on the hood at HSM, go back down and do it over again.

I've got a Prius and I have had no problem getting up to Horseshoe Meadow, either with horsepower or with ground clearance.

Watch on the left (East Side) of road for a nice turnout, Walt's Point. They launch hang-gliders there to soar the Owens Valley, often producing 100 mile flights.http://www.hanggliding.org/wiki/Walt's_Point

When I was up there in late August I saw one of those hang-gliders soaring about. How peaceful and graceful it looked in the sky. It must be quite a thrill to see the landscape from their point of view.
