I called this one "The Perfect Kind Of Suffering." What an awesome day of storm-chasing...

Two people heading down, two people contemplating what to do...

The Trench at The Cables.

Jon/John(?) from Norway and I broke trail from Trail Crest to the summit.
Need I say more about how much fun we were having with the suffering required to get there?
Priceless!

Obvioulsly, it was a calm storm, because it's rare to see such a nice blanket of snow on the summit.
That last quarter-mile was as hard as I've ever seen it! with the post-holing.

The Cables on the way down.
Lots of traffic had passed by, making the trench even more secure.

Those are some really awesome photos. They show the beauty of winter solitude. It pays to have excellent winter skills! Great job.

Just the update I was looking for. It looks like a quick MT dayhike up the mountain is out of the question now? Probably none of this stuff will melt anymore at this point.

Nice Richard - the next day we summited sometime after 6 pm - the snow had melted off the top of the rocks and it looked like a tile floor with snow-white grout.

This is the perfect hike of Mt. Whitney in my opinion. Definitely "The Perfect Kind Of Suffering." smile Your photos made me long to get back up one of my favorite mountains. Spectacular pix!!!

Hey, if someone wants to plow the trail, I may still consider a day hike this weekend smile

Bruno, it was about 12 hours with the new snow last weekend. I figure the round trip will be back down around 8-10 with the melt and packed track this weekend.

Thanks for the compliments everybody.

Richard, I don't know how you're going to choose only 12 pictures for your 2013 calendar! You've had so many beautiful pictures this year already, and these are just stunning!

You really need to just publish a book! smile

Very nice, Richard. I was looking at the web cam all day wondering how your day was going. Congratulations on another one. Are you under the double digits for finishing?

Without a doubt Richard, some of your best work (you get better with old age!!!); it took me several minutes to decide which pictures I like the most. However, for me, I like picture number 1 and number 6. Picture 6, might be quite interesting in a black and white format.

Well done!!!!!

I doubt that there won't be walk-ins available this weekend...

Yes, if you haven't heard, I'm 47 weeks into a 52 weekends project, so I'm up there every weekend.

Awesome!! I've been out of the loop for a while. What day are you going?

Can I pick up a walk-in permit the afternoon before? If not, I'd have to start way too late Sat morning.

The original plan was to head up Friday after work to pick up a permit for Saturday, but Shin and his evil son Scully will be on Baldy early Saturday morning, so I may head down to LA on Friday night and then head up to Lone Pine on Saturday afternoon for a Sunday climb. I probably won't make a final decision until Friday afternoon.

I believe the rule (starting this year) is that "non-confirmed"/last minute cancellation permits are doled out starting at 11:00am.

Bruno, looks like Saturday will be a better day for climbing, so I'll be heading up to the Portal this afternoon. Let me know if you want me to pull an extra permit for you (if available).
