I was just wondering why a great hike up to Meyson Lake was not more popular. I have hiked this trail quite a few times in the spring and summer and early fall and have never come across a lot of other hikers on the trail especially after the last lake before Meyson lake where it is a little difficult to follow the trail. Just a mystery to me since it is a great hike with spectacular views.

Hi You answered the question the last lake!
The trail makes a 180 degree turn at this point and many if not all people fail to look back and see the trail going up the west side of the canyon then into the big lake above.Traveling easterly to the base of the waterfall/ stream coming out of the lake, old days there was a sign at that location.
For the few that make it look on the east side of the Lake for the hand print in the bottom of the lake .

Drew/Meysan family from Lone Pine established this trail about the turn of the last century and would have family outing.

You are right a very special canyon and the gateway to many peaks and passes. Thanks Doug

One person's answer: When I went up there (summer of 2011) the trail was washed out in several places and hard to find. Coming back down, I lost the trail at one of those places and I had to spend a while casting about before I found it again. The lower stretch of the trail isn't very interesting with those long switchbacks. And when I got to Grass Lake (the one below the Meyson Lakes) I didn't feel like crashing willows to get past it so I turned back. All-in-all, a lot of work for a little reward although I guess that if I had gotten into the Meyson Lake basin it might have been worthwhile.

(I just saw Doug's post. Wish I had seen it 2 years ago.)
