April Fools "Culling of the Rookies" V.4?

Hi all, I haven't been on the board since our family HST crossing slated for last summer was cancelled due to my father-in-law passing away. Now it's time to get planning again for spring and summer pursuits.

I plan on my fourth annual three day April hike/climb of Whitney. Possible date is the weekend of 4/12/2012 with summit day being Saturday the 13th. It would be nice to see other WPSMB members on the route. Permit quotas don't begin until May unless rules change.

My route will be highly dependent upon group, snow and weather conditions. Primary goal is to come home. Secondary is to have a good (subjective) time. Third is to summit. I'm currently 2/3 for my April climbs.

Anybody interested?

missed out on v3, and v2 was a fail, so I guess I need to consider the v4 attempt. count me in 66% chance right now, as I need to sort out what I will be doing with the rest of my time out there.

anyone with some ski touring background interested in hooking up before or after the Whitney weekend for something on ski? If I come out west for this, I will probably stay a week or two more to do other things to make it worth the gas I burn to get there.

Fishmonger,

We'll be skiing the lifts at Mammoth 3/31-4/7. That was my reason for suggesting 4/12. I'd be happy to have you join us for some DH skiing or I could possibly rent some AT gear to join you in some (safe) BC day touring. The Mammoth dates are inflexible but Whitney dates can shift. I just need to get the family back to Long Beach for school on 4/8.

Which route is being considered?

I would love climbing or descending the Mountaineers Route. This would be a great chance for the experienced guys to pass on valuable MR navigation knowledge.

MR would be preferred, main trail is an option if there's not much snow. I'd do either one, andit's pretty much too early to tell what the conditions will be like in April.

I'm no expert, having been up via trail from the backside in summer a few times, then once each via MT and MR in April. What surprised me was just how long it took me last spring on MT from the Needle windows to the summit (with full pack). Since I'm doing it as an overnight, my route will be the same up and down unless I carry full gear over the summit again. If that was the plan, I'd go up via Mountaineer's Route because I don't want to go down without checking conditions on the way up.

By the way, last spring was a rather "spiritual" experience. By that I mean I doubted what I was doing, wished I was home, promised I'd never do it again, got scared, experienced my own insignificance, worried about others, nearly froze my butt off overnight, then by the time I got back to the trailhead was thinking about the next time.

Bump and thought of extending to 4 days. Especially if Fishmonger ends up driving out from Wisconsin, might as well make it a leisurely trip.

Thinking about the altitude and possible slog up from the foothills I like the pacing of Kurt Wedberg's trips:
Fri Day 1 to Lower Boy Scout Lake
Satur Day 2 to Iceberg Lake
Sun Day 3 Summit and back to either Iceberg or Upper Boy Scout
Mon Day 4 down and out.

Any takers?

I think that's a Flex.
Still don't know that I'll have the motivation to work that hard.

4/12 weekend confirmed - will be in Lone Pine a few days before the April 12 weekend to acclimate. Anyone else coming early, let me know, and we can probably do some warmup trips together.
