I've been studying the Mt. Whitney permit reservation site and still cannot tell what permit(s) I would need for the MR if I'd like to do a 2-day climb. Will I need a Main Trail permit (via the lottery) or overnight permit for the North Fork of the Lone Pine Creek Trail or both? Any help would be appreciated. We will have a group of about 8-9 people.

North Fork of Lone Pine Creek.

Only 6 are available via the reservation system. 4 are available for Walk-ins. 10 total per night during the quota season. Reservations can be made 6 months in advance.

This is assuming that nothing has changed this year.

I believe the following is correct and may address the source of your confusion.

Day hike only; you enter the lottery for a Whitney zone permit, which is the same permit you would need for a day hike on the main trail.

Overnight permit (what you propose): what Richard said -- specific North Fork permit, very limited numbers, entirely separate from the main trail lottery.

Eric, when you go online at Recreation.gov, you need to select the Trail JM34 (North Fork of Lone Pine Creek)... also on that page should be a choice for Exit Trail (Mt Whitney, Trail Crest Exit, JM35 (if you want to take a different route back down).
This is the link to that page (hopefully).
