I had a tradition going back about 15 years of taking a group (6 - 12)of friends up to Whitney every summer. Many first timers and lots of great experiences. Last three years I'm now 0 for 3 in the lottery. Looks like the chance of getting a permit for a larger group are slim and none now.

I saw some overnight availability when I was browsing recreation.gov the other day. I remember seeing a day in August with 6 slots available. They will be released on April 1st. Get your computer queued up and ready.
