Sorry, forgot to mention that there was plenty of water at Trailside Meadow on both our ascent and descent on August 13.

Thanks DayHiker, I appreciate it. Just like you I've found that the water at the switchbacks is unpredictable in the morning, but it sure is nice on the way back down. I'm glad to hear the water at Trailside is flowing fine. Thanks again.

How's the air quality up there from the wildfire nearby? Is that why the webcam is totally obscured today?

I was in the area from Fri afternoon until Mon morning. Yes smoke from the Shirley fire in the Kern area blew into the valley each afternoon I was there. The worst I saw was Sun evening in LP. It looked really bad at the Portal Sat afternoon but by the time I drove up later the smoke had cleared the Portal & was hanging over the valley.
The mornings were clear, tho. Sunday was our summit day & it was super clear in the morning. But at the summit by about 10am or so you could see the shift in the wind start blowing the smoke that way again......

Interested as well. Sounds like the first snow fell.

The snow stayed north of the area. There were just strong winds, but no precipitation. Trail is still clear. No flowing water on the switchbacks (coming down around 2:00 PM).

Checking out the pics from sierragator, it looks like it did snow, with some residual seen on the MR from Iceberg and up. Not a lot to worry about, but another "dusting" expected tomorrow, Thursday (20% chance).

Thanks for the info! Still trying to squeeze in a quick day hike, so any snow would make it difficult. Now I only need to find a permit.

I never would have guessed that it did snow, so for practical purposes, then it really didn't. I never set a foot on snow and saw only a few small patches (thinking it was from last season).

Snagged up permits for 10/6. I hope I'm in good enough shape to cover the long distance; haven't done too much as of late

Just going by his pics from his hike on 9/22/13. But, it was the Mountaineer's Route. Not sure how much it matters, as looking at the current web cam, looks like quite a "dusting" today.

Was up there the last two days. Thursday it snowed off and on most of the day. About an inch or two stuck around from Trail Camp up.
Yesterday was clear gorgeous blue skys, with wind only hitting us about half way up the switchbacks, then around the final push up the back side of Whitney
Heading up the switchbacks it was snowy but not too icy. We summited around noon, then headed back down (after a a very windy 45 minutes on top) By then most of the snow had been melted/walked away. On the way down, the cables were snowy but not too icy. Microspikes weren't needed, and I think there wasn't quite enough snow for them to bite into.

Sounds like everything is still passable without crampons.

Tif, I was up yesterday, you'll have no problems pending further inclement weather. The snow was down in the cracks and crevices on north-facing slopes. Prep yourself for cold temps and wind. It was certainly beautiful though:

I'd show up, but I'm your typical overweight, out-of-shape American right now... I don't want to turn into a Rescue Statistic...
Seriously, thanks for the invite. Have fun.

Sunday was a beautiful day for a hike. Apart from some ice at the cables (completely avoidable), still summer conditions for now.
First time I dayhiked the peak without any sort of acclimatization; definitely slowed down above trail crest but not bad overall.
