Hi Jack and Betsy will do a week of talks starting on June 3 Oceanside and a night at each store Check out A 16'S WEB FOR LOCATIONS AND TIMES!!!
If you do not know this couple they are a must see. Betsy starting hiking Whitney several years before Jack , On Jacks first trip he set a PB of 13 hours, he tells me at the store how great that was and thought I should be moved, I was ! I said a 91 year old lady was slightly quicker but had done it 24 times after turning 67.

The experience this couple has over the many years and trips from all directions reaching the summit of Whitney allows them to answer your questions not from book reading but by being on the ground in all conditions.

Plus on off days they stay around the store and answer questions and understand the workings of the Mountain, Parking, CAMPING, Water stops, and the most critical understand the late night events that can happen when someone is not back .

Please make this a thing to do on your check list if you plan to hike the mountain. Ask questions and take notes .

My take on Whitney : The walk is straight forward if you have a plan, train on flat ground for at least one 20 mile walk and stay with your group , Well take a jacket and snacks because you never know.....

Betsy & Jack,
I will try and come to the WLA store to see you if traffic will cooperate on a Friday night. It's on my calendar!

Was able to get to their presentation this past week.
What a pleasure to meet these two , who shared all aspects of the trail. They welcomed all questions and were a true inspiration.

Jack had some advise that I have not our seen or heard before. I was awe struck with his gear and have made a few changes to mine.

Betsy is some thing else, she is so knowledgeable , what it boiled down too was keep it simple, don't experiment with gear, and enjoy your hike. Be prepared to turn around, there are numerous reasons you may have to cut your trip short , but it happens.
I'm so glad I had time to get to their presentation, And as an extra bonus I won in the raffle a copy of "Mountain lore from the Whitney Store" , what a read, full of great info and one of the best pieces of information about Mount Whitney I have found in on place.

When your going through Hell, keep going.....W.C.

Hi Jack & Betsy,
I enjoyed very much your informative presentation about Mt. Whitney at A16. Everyone should attend your presentation before they plan their hike.

I don't know how you got your nickname "Crazy Jack". I didn't suspect any craziness in you from the presentation.

How about "Crazy Jack & Cool Betsy" ?

Looking forward to seeing you on the trail next time.

Spent a lot of time thinking about this one yesterday and the best that I could come up with:

Crazy Jack & Wild(flower) Betsy.

Well unless somebody can come up with anything better, I think Wild(flower) is it.

Thanks Richard!

I'm sorry I missed this! I got to talk to Jack & Betsy at the A16 Backpackers' Swap Meet, and they were so fascinating & informative that we never got around to look at everyone's gear, and so bought nothing! See, they even saved us money! smile

I'm headed to a Whitney seminar at REI San Diego tomorrow night - hopefully it'll be as helpful as the one I attended at A16 in April.

Could this be the circus that

Sorry but Bets and I don't know how to ski!!

I agree with Bee, not sure what it all means. I'm a chicken sandwich guy at the portals and a big night out would be a spaghetti dinner at the Mount Whitney.

Looking forward to our time at the Portals this summer.

See you soon, Crazy Jack and Wildflower Betsy

Man, that Chicken Sandwich Plate at the WPS...
McDonald's is my second choice.

Sitting on top of Five Fingers for the fifth time today...
Yeah, some of us like doing repeats...
Nothing wrong with it as long as there's a healthy reason for it...
And a love...

Supposedly, I'm an expert at encryption...
I'll take a crack at deciphering SG's comment...
You want the person who goes out and sets the records to be someone who loves it and isn't just looking for attention...
SG being the perfect example in being the first to do the Triple...
Couldn't have been happier than if I'd done it myself.

I think that it would be funny to bee slogging along at my snail pace and have the same person pass me up and down the hill 3X (it might be comforting to know that I was not alone on the trail)

BTW, I am pleased to know that the Portal has chicken sandwiches! (I cannot tolerate beef & dairy due to allergies)
