RG told me Alex Honnold is doing a Bike & Climb of the CA 14ers...
Would be cool to see him in the Russell/Whitney/Muir area... ought to be happening soon (maybe already happened?) Maybe he'll throw in a repeat of Amy and Myles route on Keeler Needle (just to make the day a little more interesting).

Richard, if he was on Tyndall Saturday and is biking south, he should be in your neck of the woods soon - like maybe now. The best way to keep up with him is following his Facebook page .

He came up the east face of Whitney yesterday morning. He was talking to a couple of people right when we got there around 10:45. Someone mentioned that he said it took him around 1 hr from the base. The weather was absolutely perfect - we stayed until noon. We had originally planned on going up the 4th, but I kept pushing back dates until I knew the weather was clearing up. We could have hung out longer, but we were hungry and wanted to get some burgers. Here's a picture of my 14yo son @ Guitar Sunday afternoon. (We went over Cottonwood pass Sat am to Rock Creek. Sunday to Guitar & Monday to Whitney & out to Portal.) And here's Monday morning dawning clear before we summitted:

So did Alex hit the Portal for a burger and fries after free soloing the East Face (probably with his eyes closed and using just one arm)?

I'll have to ask the Crew @ WPS whether he showed his face at the Store...
Saw that he did Mithral Dihedral on Russell and I saw another photo posted somewhere that made it look like he was coming up something on the east side of Mt. Muir (may be mistaken about that...).
There are not many people who could do that kind of link-up of THREE LONG ROUTES...
Brings back to mind Peter Croft and his: -East Buttress on Mt. Whitney -Fishhook Arete on Mt. Russell -Over the top of Tunaborra on his way to... -East Ridge of Mt. Carl Heller -Over the top to Mt. Carillon on his way back to...
A Burger Plate at the WPS!!!!!

A little more detail about Alex's trip to Whitney, from a blog by his sister. Seems he free-soloed Keeler Needle, while his buddy went up the East Face and his sis and the photographer summitted by the chute/F400. Muir and Russell as well: Family Bike Adventure Indeed

Stasia was the only one besides me & my son wearing a big lifeguard hat. That photo of her & her brother really jogged my memory - I recall she had those dark running shorts and long, thick hair under her floppy sun hat. Lots of smiles too; everyone was in a pretty good mood since the weather was so perfect.

We've taken that death ride route (in our car, 'natch) many times from SoCal up to Lake Tahoe.
The only real difference is that we don't loop back from Hermit valley, and we proceed to link up over Luther pass off the Carson pass road to head up into S Lake Tahoe.
Fun drive if you're heading that way, as opposed to going all the way into the Carson valley via 395 and going over either Kingsbury or US 50.

Philippe Petite was the high wire guy. Just happened to watch the movie, Man on a Wire, a few days ago and found it very interesting. But maybe you are thinking of someone else? Aah, here is the story, http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Willig

Yeah, that's it. I remember seeing him on the evening news and then on Wild World of Sports. He was climbing in Zion and took a screamer on live TV. At the time, I wondered whether he did it for the cameras...
