Stopping by the Portal store on Saturday, I told Doug we were going to summit Langley the next day. He told me about a shortcut up to Langley from the dry lake above 6th lake off of the Cottonwood Lakes trail. I had been to the dry lake before and looking up the sides seemed impossibly steep to overcome but I once thought that about Army Pass when I first gazed up from 4th lake. He asked me if I could take a look at it on our way down from Langley on Sunday.

We did and here is what we found:
There is a scree field that starts in the lake and tops out near the base of Langley. We’re not sure how difficult it would be to navigate this field both up and down. Has anybody done this?

In early season while still covered in snow, that route is a fun climb, though a bit steep near the top. It is somewhat less steep than the tops of Army, New Army, and "Navy" passes, though. I don't recall there being any significant difficulty with the route other than the rather steep exit. I haven't tried it when dry, but the chute on the opposite side of the drainage visible in your "Looking down scree field" picture is not as bad as it looks when dry, and makes a nice variation as well.

It's not that bad if you're used to dealing with a bit of scree.

Richard...I noticed you went down New Army...any reason why you could not have descended the same way you went up?

I had headed up that way in the hope that it would still be in decent "winter" shape. It wasn't and I didn't want to deal with the slop/slush that it would have been on the descent.

Also skipped Army Pass on the descent because I didn't feel like "gearing up" again.

It's actually a pretty fun scree ski down in the summer (once you clear that steep section right at the top).
