John Wayne.  A museum scavenger hunt.  A contraband dog on federal property.  First ascents.  Potato salad with palm tree decorations, made by a crazy Mad Hatter.  Homemade tamales.  Moon over Alabama.  Wilderness First Aid.  "It's a maze out here."  Talking until 3 a.m.  Woolyback.  Chicken fried steak.  An iconic arch.  100 mules (plus a few "spares").

Thanks, Doug, Maura, and everyone for a great WPSMB outing that fed the body, the mind, and the soul!

I didn't do anything but
drink beer and sit...
and talk...

I'm still really wondering about The Other Doug... (See Aki's photos.)

It was a GREAT TIME.
THANKS!

Weather was perfect for the ride up...
It stayed warm enough that the night ride home wasn't bad either...
Nice Full Moon!

Richard I didn't see you running to my rescue. wink they cornered me.
Tracie and Rosie remembered this from last summers famous tutu hike.
Who knew they would make a Cammo one that I said I would have wear.
At least it was cammo so I could hide.
BTW It was good to see you.
Take care.

Doug,
Thank you very much for organizing the Potluck/Moonlight Hiking.
It was so nice to see WPSMB members.
Sorry, I didn't bring any foods or drinks. Next time for sure, I'll do it.

Doug Sr. and his extended families members,
Everyone loves you. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Jeff H. (Axeman),
Jeff,
I really enjoyed spending a time in Alabama hills with you and your friends,(Chris, Cady, Julian, Alex, Mark), and especially Carole, Doug and Ryan(?). Thank you very much for setting up a brand new route for everyone by drilling many holes on the tall rock wall and setting up the bolts for hours. I was very impressed with you and your friends about total calmness and control for the unexpected situation and taking care of all member's safety. I'll bring a headlamp next time. I kind a enjoyed climbing in the dark. I want to join with you and your friends for next outing in any climbing in the future.

Don't worry, Richard, your tutu will be made of microspikes.

Doug, as always, I can't put into words how much you're appreciated (but once I start talking I come pretty close...after an hour or five). Thanks for being the hub for all of us rusty, bent and wobbly spokes. Sorry I wasn't able to get all the leaves out of the pond...

For those glued to their armchairs, here's what the horde was up to Saturday afternoon:

Bolting as we go

It ended up being a nice long route

...that became even longer

And then the conga line started. Mountain Ginger rocked the rock!

And we were very happy that, not only did Shin find us, he flew up the route

Even though we ended up being a bit late for the potluck, a good time was had by all.

For those interested, the stats are:

Peanut Butter & Chocolate
(aka That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles)
5.9R, 175'
9 bolts ("sport") ground up.
FA: Jeff Mahoney, Chris Wing, Katie Martin, Alex Lau, Carole Christianson, Shin Nimura, Mark Buntaine and Julian Lim.

Great catching up with everyone at the potluck, too.

So until next time...

That was a great day out, so good to see everyone having fun,
Thanks to: - Doug for providing an awesome evening at the hostel, then leading us (some slightly intoxicated) across the desert trail.
- Doug (trailbud) for the Potluck Planning.
- Rosie & Ken for driving us all over the place, (I could get use to having a chauffeur), but since you also drove at the last WPSMB gathering I was at, next time will be on me.

Karin, how was your friend the other Karin, hope she is OK.

See you all on the trail,

Phil

Hello! Word is that Carin is on the mend. I believe Chris is planning to post an update.

Rumor has it that a Baldy/Bridge to Nowhere weekend may be in the offing.... Sounds like a winner to me.....

Now, some photos from the ride home. Because, well, because.

Oh, I also wanted to mention that Chris & Katie got engaged Saturday morning (the question was popped in the Alabama Hills) and the plan is for the wedding to be at the Portal. Mr. Thompson may need to get out the bolo tie to officiate...

Hey Trail Bud, thank you too for keeping on top of the online organization for this big to-do. I hope Ryan had an okay time climbing. Too bad about the shoe (was it ever found?); it would've been great to get him up the climb also. But, again, there's always next time...

Congratulations to the couple!

Yes, Whitney Portal is a great place for a wedding...

My wife and I got married there in July 2007....Kurt Wedberg (Yes, the Kurt "Wed"berg we all know) did the officiatin' and Doug provided the post-nup meal (after the newlywed hike to Lone Pine Lake).

Journey well...
