Hey All...
I'm taking my 12 year old son on his first backpacking trip. We're spending 3 nights in the Emigrant Wilderness in August and if all goes well will be heading to Whitney in early Sept. For the past 2 1/2 years he's been fighting brain cancer, but is well enough to make this trip happen in a few weeks. My wife is worried about us so I want to take a SPOT along. Any recommendations for places to rent them? Not sure how this trip will go and am already buying lots of gear for Tyler, so don't have the funds right now to buy and pay for the unit and service.
Thanks all!
Bryan

Doubt anybody rents SPOT out.

My B-I-L used to rent a SAT phone for some of our back country outings. It wasn't cheap, especially if he used to phone rather than just having it in case of emergency.

You might want to look at a marine-style personal locator beacon, like this: http://www.boatus.com/foundation/epirb/
I'm not an expert on this topic by any means, but I believe these devices are generally regarded as more reliable than SPOT, and they are available for rental.

Bryan, I agree with Richard -if you are concerned with emergency communications, a satellite phone is the best insurance... do a web search for Satellite phone rentals... best wishes for your Sept climb...

I love my spot connect. I can send predefined messages or type in my own text. It "connects" with your smart phone and can be used everywhere, sea, summit & sity (city) laugh

But to actually answer your question: I googled Spot Satellite rental - several sites were returned. I do not endorse nor recommend any of these sites, I'm just sayin' they are out there...

here is one of the links.

Good luck and I hope you have a wonderful time.

Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

It's good that I don't mind being proved wrong...
Interesting camping equipment rental place that the link leads to.
