Hi Last system moved out but now fall temps. Wind is keeping smoke north but we are having hours were you will have trouble breathing so plan for a slower hike and expect smoke, colder than normal temps and check for road closing alerts from the bay area .Thanks Doug

We were hoping to "sneak" over to the Portal Store after fishing in Tioga Lake this Labor Day weekend, but the Rim fire has "closed" the 120 from Crane Flat to White Wolf.

Sux living on the "wrong" side of the Sierra...

But Oakhurst has South Gate Brewing Company with home brews and good food...

Won't be like the Portal but will have to do...

We did a Whitney day hike on 8/29 in very cold, windy conditions...until the summit where we found better weather than we had all day: light breeze, warm, perfectly clear viewing conditions kept us up there for over an hour. Just goes to show you never know unless you go.

Found it easier than we expected, which only goes to show the value of an oft-quoted piece of mountaineering advice by Dr. Longstaff, that ‘you must go and rub your nose in a place before being certain that it won’t “go.” ’
