Well said, Bee. I can speak from experience that the social divorce mentioned above is indeed another form of bullying - it hurts - and I, for one, intend to take the higher road.

Looking forward to the potluck/midnight ramble/group hike.

Akichow in response to your marmot question, I saw one Aug 25. Didn't pay enough attention to notice if it had a bad leg or not. & they all look fat to me....

20 or so years ago when I was on the summit of Mt. Dana I was throwing some raw trail mix to a marmot & got lambasted by the ranger that was up there.....

We saw a huge marmot on the summit August 2nd. I also didn't notice if he had a bad leg but was shocked by his size and lack of personal space, if you will. I regret I did not take a picture.

A possible sighting! Did he have a huge black band across his face that made him look like a raccoon? And did he look like he knows how to pose for pics? I'll have to dig some pics out. But the lame leg was always the key to confirmation.

Oh yah... he DEFINITELY knows how to pose! These are pictures from last summer:

I am one of those lurkers someone mentioned. I hiked to the top of Whitney in 2011.

I don't post on here that much because less important things such as writing magazine articles and books get in the way. I really enjoy all of your posts and your photos and you all got me through the 3 weeks that I couldn't even see the Sierra from the window of our home in Gardnerville because of the smoke from the Rim Fire and all the ash falling from the sky. It was nice to see your photos and look at the webcam of Mt. Whitney to remind me the Sierra was still out there.

Since this post was initially about books and turned to marmots and someone mentioned that everything is related, one of the guys in my writers' critique group has written the most adorable kids' book about young Monte the Marmot who goes on a long journey to save the elderly Methuselah the Marmot, who has been banished from the marmot colony for telling stories to the young marmots. The book is with the publisher now and it'll be out in a year or so. I fell in love with the book when I read it, and every time I see a marmot I think of Monte and his heroic journey.

So thank you for posting such cute photos of our furry friend and for all your beautiful photos.

This summit lurker found no fat little marmot on the 5th of September. I did give a look about. I was even dragging around some Ritter sport bar that was aquired during celebratory hugs - Yum,what is in that??

No fat little hop-a-long marmot asking for "wafer thin" bits.

My first induction was some girls hike thing.... grin
It didn't scare me away and I still love you all~~~~~~~

Coming up tomorrow - see ya'll then~

Hey, Akichow,

I would love to be at the potluck/hike but my husband and I have made reservations in Hope Valley for that weekend and can't make it down to Lone Pine. Hoping to join you all for a potluck next year sometime.

I probably couldn't keep up with everyone on the trail. I was one of the slowest hikers to ever make it to the top of Mt. Whitney in one day: Just over 19 hours from the Portal to the top and back to the Portal. (Is there a record for the slowest?)

And the combination of planning my wedding this summer and being stuck inside for 2 weeks due to all the smoke has also left me not as well conditioned as in summer's past.

But I will watch the board for any potlucks you have next year.

Ironic thread title is ironic.

Keith, I've ordered your book to send to my sister, who has 3 boys, ages 5 and under. Milo (5) is just starting Kindergarten, and Jude (2) is now "in charge" of watching out for his brother, Teddy (6mos) at day care. Great and extremely important concept, thanks for putting it all out there for us and letting us know here about your work.

Yes, Akichow, and it's only 20 minutes from home so I can monitor the changing aspens leaf by leaf. Hoping to get to Bishop Creek to see the foliage there, too, which is already turning.

Keith, I like to promote other author's books on my Twitter account. I'll look up your book and tweet about it in the next couple of days.

Morning Laura...

Thank you so much...I really appreciate it. And yes, its an incredibly important topic that relates to our children. Any honest feedback is greatly appreciated. Look forward to meeting yourself and some of the others on the board in the near future.

Sticking to the Off-Topic Theme...

Horner did win the Vuelta... oldest man (I think Longo may have won some women's tours in her 40's) to win a Grand Tour.

The Kiwis are about to take the America's Cup away from America again...

Thank you Kimberly...! Are you an author yourself?

Richard...what exactly are they racing? I remember the Cup being down in San Diego years ago and they raced what looked like a boat!

My first impression when I saw a YouTube replay was that they're racing highly unusual sail planes now... would be interesting to see stats on how long a hull is actually touching water... looks like some kind of a cross between an ice racer and a catamaran... it does have some fancy name, but I don't remember... hopefully, the Kiwis will bring it back to realty for their defense (whenever that happens). (I haven't watched any of this stuff since I worked with a sailboat racer back in the early 80's. I wanted one of those yachts.)

I'm watching it also & enjoying the hell out of it. Yachting is an extreme sport now. The technology, the tactics, the SPEED. Holy Cow! & the camera work is phenomenal. The fastest 2 hours on TV. I tape it & watch when I get home. So don't tell me what happens today! ;-p .....

Keith, yes, I've had about 600 magazine articles published over the years although I spend a lot of my time writing for a business now so I only write one or two magazine articles per year. I also have a book on Amazon.

I looked up your book and read a sample of it. It's very good and the illustrations are really cute. You might want to take a look at the description of the book -- the description might scare people away because it's really long with no paragraph break. At least that's how it was when I was looking last week. I think if you shorten the description by a lot and put some paragraph breaks in there you will sell more books.
