One wonderful thing this message board has done is to create interest in the surrounding peaks. Muir, Thor, and Russell are the main ones, but Lone Pine and some others are getting attention now. But especially Thor Peak. Situated where it is, you couldn't ask for any better views from a summit!

Thor is my second most-visited mountain. With its ease of approach, lack of permit issues, variety of routes, almost year-round accessibility as a day climb, and fantastic views, it is a great objective whether you plan ahead or go up on the spur of the moment.

WPS message board regulars have described some routes; for visuals of those and others go to 0 Whitney Miscellany and scroll down to the bottom. There are seven views of Thor, starting from the east, and progressing counterclockwise around to the south.

With the routes I have done, and those suggested by Tiffany, Jessica, TomC, and others, Thor Peak is like a candy shop and we are the little kids.

Life is good.

Thanks for the links. I really liked the picture where you could see 8 miles of the trail and the one of pretty much all the 97 switchbacks.

Thor Peak is the best! Your routes are much more complete then any I have ever read about. Even though my first and favorite route is the southeast route, they are all worth trying out.

Could be tough to decide between the routes laid out here. I guess I will have to plan some return trips.

I almost did Thor this past summer but had to turn back above LBL because of a storm. All this talk of Thor is making me anxious to get back up there. Those pictures are really helpful. I wasn't sure at the time whether I was heading up the right way or not. Now I know.

We headed up to Thor Peak over the weekend. As you will see in the photos, there is a break in the slab shelves on the northeast ridge, just below Lower Boy Scout lake in the North Fork.

This route requires one to stay on the south side of the canyon below Lower Boy Scout Lake, skipping the Ebersbacher Ledges. This is easier early in the season when snow covers up the trees chocking the canyon just above the river crossing.
