I have a related question about the government shutdown. Will Whitney Portal Road remain open? Our group has reserved a campsite on October 4, and has a day-hike permit for Mt. Russell on October 5.

Just heard they're mobilizing the National Guard to keep people from fishing the trout pond...

Ok, so if the permit office is closed, I imagine there won't be any rangers to enforce them either ?

Keep us posted on the road. Isn't the portal road just a public road like any other? That would be really lame if they closed it...

Well if the campground stays open, then the road should stay open as well. And as long as the road stays open, I'll bet most people that had their trip scheduled will continue on schedule, permit in hand or not. The trailhead isn't going to be manned by security personnel, like say, the road going into Yosemite. So people will be going up regardless. I know I would.

Yeah, not to mention, we PAID for the permit as well! Are they going to refund everyone?! I thought services with a specific payment were going to continue to operate?

You paid for a reservation, not a permit. The permit is free.
I'm curious to see what happens to people who shelled out for NPS campsites in advance. Normally you can cancel, with some penalty, but right now it isn't even possible to do that.

Does it really matter? If you don't get your "free" permit, you are still out the money for no good reason since you can't cancel the reservation.

"Nothing really matters." -- Queen If it were me I'd take a copy of my reservation along and start walking. In fact I did just that one time when they failed to put my permit in the overnight box as promised. I didn't encounter a ranger on that trip but I believe most rangers are decent enough to be sympathetic to the spirit of the law over the letter of the law. Whether or not Ted Stevens would hand you a citation or a provide you with a refund is a different question.

I've been told I'm not to do any volunteeer rangering for the duration. I plan a climbing trip in the area this weekend, but will be in a trench coat and dark glasses.)

So if Whitney Portal Road is open on Wednesday, most likely it will still be open on Friday? I have a campground reservation and day-hike permit, but the road is the most important thing.

Wouldn't BC Rangers be considered Critical/Essential staff? Probably should rephrase that as Shouldn't...
What about the guys who've been out there enforcing the hunting laws? Are they sitting on the sideline too?

Thank you, Ranger Bob.
