Continuing the discussion from the website thread. Richard P has a plan and tools to build one or more winter hostel outposts on the MR. A number of folks have expressed interest in being part of an igloo building extravaganza.
One proposed date: Jan 18-20 (MLK Day weekend).
Who's interested? Which weekend works better -- Jan 18-20 or Feb 15-17?

At least now it would be a bit cooler...
And what's a few extra miles for someone who't been up-and-down the NF Three Times in one day?

Feb works better for me, too. I'll be in Sacramento the other dates.

I will see if I can borrow my friend's saw (it was custom made for sawing snow blocks on the mountain).

Where's Trailbud Doug when you need him?!
So, tentatively Feb 15-17. Possible participant list in development:
Richard P Akichow Doug Sr Hikergirl76 James L? M.C. Mountain Ginger Ridgeline Dave Rosabella Tracie B?

Sounds like a lot of fun, count me in and probably Nancy as well, Feb 15-17 seems a pretty good date.

Karen I'd be happy to develop the list and stuff as before. When it's time to update next I'll repost it OK? We need a second snow block maker, I'll look around.

Yay!!!
So I am thinking that the less snowskill confident might have the option of building a Quinzee hut at the Portal. Just a possible option for those who want to participate but may not be sure about ascending to 10K or higher up on the MR.
Though last year, I climbed (with Kurt et al) to LBL and UBL using mostly snowshoes. As I recall, the climb to LBL was a pretty straightforward snowshoe, though I realize everything is condition-dependent. Going up to UBL was a little more advanced.
Quinzee huts do not require special tools other than a shovel. Some good videos on FB on how to make this type of hut -- kind of a nice skill to have. I've always wanted to practice it. I think 2-3 people can make one in a few hours (best to leave the snowpile to set a bit before hollowing it out).
I'd offer up a Nepal slideshow at the hostel (with RP?) if it fit in the schedule. Not sure what that might be.

Sounds like fun!! I need to find out if I can get my backpack from Gregory first (remember it broke during the tutu trip and I gave it to Kurt?) before deciding whether I can do an overnight trip.

As we get closer perhaps the Igloo King a/k/a Hawk Man could share his thoughts re logistics. Though that may have to wait until we know where the road becomes impassible.
DobeMom, I think there are a lotta ways to do this and I don't think that lack of a pack should get in your way. And, you can always rent or borrow a pack...

By February, we will most likely be traveling on foot for a good part of the road to the Portal. Cheap plastic sleds and a rope make it alot easier than on your back. The last time I did this there were skiers flying down that had started around Trail Crest. Wish I could ski like that!

I believe the Thompsons have a snowmobile...
I can't see myself building an igloo and then not using it...

I am trying to figure out if, realistically, I am a builder or just a cheerleader.
I don't currently have the strength and conditioning to lug a 40 lb pack up to LBL from below the Portal in one day. I've been rehabbing a shoulder injury (rotator cuff), and only recently got back into hiking from a 7-week break (nice 10-mile, 1850' hike yesterday from the American River confluence). Shoulder issues are still limiting. Where are the tutu guys when you need them?
Thinking maybe spend a night at the Portal if weather is good (maybe build a Quinzee hut there), and dayhike the following day up to LBL to see the handiwork.....
Also thinking about extending the trip, and sneaking in a trip up Corkscrew before the snow fun. I have never done it. Little birdie tells me there may be some interest in a DV pre-trip....

Don't have time to be diplomatic, but...
A group outing isn't a group outing if we split up... Recall Candlelight with two warring factions going their separate ways...
Let's decide on something that EVERYBODY feels comfortable with...
If I were to head all the way up to LBSL under fairly difficult conditions, I would probably try and continue on to the summit.
I think that is best left to The Annual Culling The Rookies Group Climb...

Hey there! I just know my current limitations and am trying to figure out how I can participate! There's no war, factions, or anything else. (Good thing I have no recollection of Candlelight since I wasn't there!)
