I'm thinking about riding my motorcycle to the Portal to do a dayhike of Whitney and was wondering how safe it would be to leave it there.

Obviously I'm not concerned about bears breaking in... However, 2 things worry me.

1. A couple of big guys with a pickup truck could make off with a motorcycle. I've read about problems in the parking area, but has anything this major every happened?

2. I would need to leave my helmet, jacket and m/c boots (worth $1K+) behind. Would it be safe to put them in a food locker inside a Pac-Safe (wire mesh bag that can be locked to something to make theft more difficult)?

Thanks for the advice.

I will be interested to hear what knowledgeable people have to say about this topic. Someone with a motorcycle might be able to make some coin ferrying packs and climbers to the trailhead now that there is a locked gate. Not sure how the local authorities will look upon motorcycles beyond the gate. I would pay for a ride Friday morning the 21st!
Regarding the locked Gate, you won't have to worry about anyone with a pickup truck heisting your bike. I don't think.

Monday morning at 11:!%b I will go to the bank at 112233 No Main St in my 47 Buick painted green and purple with the mud flaps, air horn, and twin spot lights, Any chance if I then decide to request a large transfer of funds I will get caught?

Sorry couldn't help myself.

You can ask the nice store people at the store to hold your "stuff" and we have had motorcycles park behind the store.

We had one MC taken but the young man Parked it near the middle of the road came and told me he hoped it would not be taken and I felt he had it removed by his design or request if you get the drift? Thanks hope to see you this summer I have had them motorcycles since about 12 years old, last week found out they are making Cushmans again and the other old guy even knew about Simplexs and Mustangs!!

I parked my bike by the pond for a few days a couple of years ago. Never felt like it was in danger of being taken. Maybe that's just my naivety. There were also a couple of motorcycles in the lot during that same trip. One, was still there the day I left.
