Just wondering if anyone has recently driven the road to Mahogany Flat campground (to hike Telescope Peak)? If so, can a 'car' make it? I'm thinking of driving it in late June. Thanks.
From an April 18 TR: "We arrived the night before the hike and left a car at Mahogany Flats Campground. We had heard that you need a 4X4 vehicle to get up this road, however we made it in a Toyota Yaris with no issues."
I haven't been up there this year but I did last year.
The trouble with this road isn't uneven berms or ruts but the road is shale and sharp gravel. Really if you take your time you'll be fine.
My buddy and I drove up in his high-clearance 2WD Isuzu Trooper (a great vehicle to access TH's that require a rough drive)and he thought it would be a bright idea to drive up at 40mph.
He got a flat.
He also didn't bring a jack.
We also saw loads of low-clearance vehicles at the TH. Slow and steady will get you there just fine.
