What makes you say that it was quiet? I summited today at 5:30am (just in time for sunrise) and passed quite a few people on my way down. You're right though...the conditions were perfect (a little chilly at the summit at that hour though). smile

I don't have anything of value to add...

but if I'd been up there...

I'd have posted lots of pretty pictures.

Hi Weather forecast updated it will rain today, well it is raining now and will rain until it stops then will return to the 30% chance of rain until it starts raining again.

I didn't see Bill the HST fast hiker , but keep seeing the crew and Lisa Smith working on the 4 doubles from the summit to Badwater. Badwater revised route starts next week. I think Monday we think the finish line will be in the Portal so watch for cars, trucks, runners and support crews if you are on the road.

.We will stay open the night of the race. If you hiking stop by to support the runners as they finish . These runners come from many countries and you may get a chance to see some of the top ultra/long distance runners. If that isn't interesting just come look at them , what 135 miles and 17,000' gain looks like.

Until that time. Bring a jacket and snacks.

Not pretty, but we're probably going to see a lot of this this year... Nicolls Fire... maybe out by now... there were a lot of air tankers heading up over Walker Pass on Fri and Sat...

Whoa, I viewed the course for Badwater 2014!

Essential Race Route for 2014
Start in Lone Pine and run up Tuttle Creek
Run to the top of Horseshoe Meadow (23 miles uphill with 6500 feet of elevation gain)
Run back down to Lone Pine
Run southeast to Keeler on Hwy 136
Run up Yellow Grade Road to Cerro Gordo (7.5 miles uphill with 5500 feet of elevation gain)
Run back down Yellow Grade Road to Hwy 136
Run southeast on Hwy 136 / hwy 190 to the Darwin Turn-Off.
Turn around and run Hwy 190 / Hwy 136 back to Lone Pine
Finish by running from Lone Pine to Whitney Portal (13 miles uphill with 5000 feet of elevation gain)

Compared to the traditional route, the 2014 version has over 17,000’ (5,200m) of cumulative vertical ascent and 12,700’ (3900m) of cumulative descent, while the traditional Death Valley-based route has 13,000’ (3962m) of cumulative vertical ascent and 4,700’ (1433m) of cumulative descent. Though the 2014 edition does not start in Badwater and traverse Death Valley and Panamint Valley, the actual topography of the new route is significantly more challenging and very much worthy of the moniker, "world's toughest foot race."

It is great it starts in Lone Pine. What publicity for the holy city.

Holy crap! Horseshoe Meadows? Heck, my vehicle pants when going up the incline.

And then back and around up and down and up again...Geesh!

Wonder if Marshall Ulrich (63) has entered yet again!

Best of everything to everyone in this year's Badwater Ultramarathon.

Journey well...

Wait: Badwater is no longer Badwater? Isn't that something like celebrating the 4th of July on the 3d or 5th? Of like, August?
