Hi Enough wind today that you needed a jacket, Could do without the snack as most left early. Drifts on the upper elevation and most groups turned back about 13,000.
One slip and long walkout.
Two guys heading towards the Western Front. I met these guys several years ago and was amazed at the routes they travel almost all cross country and straight lines. Homemade gear and old school style.Ask how they planned on crossing the Kern one said at the place they think they will make it across. I liked that answer shows they have no clue until they reach the Kern and find the safest way across.

Temps hitting about 50 during the day in the Portal and lows about 40. Without the wind very nice days.

80+ over the passes down here...
50+ in town...

I ever tell you I hate wind?

On a more serious note: are the folks who headed over to Everest OK? (Big earthquake has killed a LOT of people, including climbers on The Big E.)

Doug, if hikers are getting to 13k on the Whitney trail before turning back does that mean that Bishop Pass, at 12k, should be doable without equipment? It would be nice to drop into the Doozy of a Basin soon.

Hi Burt talked with a guy from June Lake today and he said they were hit with snow the last few days, I would expect the passes north to need a week or so to clear out.
Two guys did the loop on Whitney today up the Mountaineers Route and down the trail, said 4 hours from the summit to Trailcrest, some drifts chest deep .Winds very strong. They had a a recording of the wind at the summit and blowing snow .Both very strong climbers one flew down from Alaska for the climb said was like being home!

That's why I poked my nose back on the forum - saw the news and was hoping that everyone around the Whitney community is safe.

Nice to see ya' Richard!
