Hi Quick update short rain in the Portal last night but temps dropped quick and snow above 12,500 some still showing in the chute on the North Fork and last switchback on the main trail.

So if you put off the trip this summer waiting for a the kids to go back to school and permits to be open here is your chance. Just bring all the winter mountaineering gear and a back up plan if we start the normal 7-10 day storm cycle.

I'm planning a 6-7 day trip starting Sunday that will include Bishop and Knapsack passes. I can carry micro-spikes if I have to but I sure would as soon skip the extra weight and bulk. Anyone been up around 12k in that area recently? And what about smoke?

Hi Doug,

Glad to see the site backup. really missed it. I'm thinking
of trying Mt. Leconte this weekend. Is there snow showing in
the chutes above Meysen Lake. Thanks for your input.

Rick

Hi Doug,
Went up late Friday afternoon.. spent the night at Camp Lake 34degrees. Head up the outfall for Meysan Lake around 7:30. About 3 inches of south at the south end of the lake. The chutes/Bowl were
all covered in snow. Spent about 3 hours working my way toward the plateau, but with the north orientation the snow conditions were variable. toward the top of the rocks on the right side lots of kick stepping into 2-3 feet of looser snow. Finally found that at age 66 I need to be in better shape, so hope we have lots of snow on Baldy this year to practice in the bowl. I'll try and post some pictures, but I've never done that before. Any suggestions?

Hi Thanks for the report, I could tell Meysan Canyon had more snow than the Whitney area, and since less or no traffic it would be slow going. Pictures Well someday I will try to figure it out Richard started a link many years ago and most post on that thread.

Halloween permit. I'll be watching this site to monitor conditions. Any chance of a no-crampons summit?

Thanks,
Margaret

Instructions for posting to Whitney Portal Message Board:
This is an “abbreviated” set of instructions. Not all steps are shown, but should be sufficient to “get the job done’.

First you need access to an “independent” web site where you can post your pictures, and then be able to reference that web site with the address of the picture you want to post.

I use a web site called “Tinypic”: tinypic.com/

Once there you will need to register. Tiny pic is free, however the User Interface is not great, so you may want to consider a different site.

Then you will need to upload what ever pictures you want to post to the Message Board.

Following are a couple of screen captures showing the process. Again, I am not showing everything, but hopefully enough to meet your need.

First image shows uploading. You must first register in order to upload.

Second Image shows where to find the “Link” to include with your Message. This references the picture in question and the Message Board Software will go fetch the picture and display it.

If you cut and past the link properly your picture will be posted as so.

Hope this helps. Sorry if the description is a bit brief.

John
