Rumor has it ribbons will be cut, historic trails will be walked, and life generally will be celebrated sometime around November 12? Jonesing for the Eastern Sierra and the Alabama Hills.... My dog is about ready for a road trip, too.... Time to see the portal crew before the 2016 season slips into 2017 ( with or without snow)?

The plan is on ! The Good Lord willing the road will be finished and we can cut that ribbon at the same time or wait at the closure together for awhile.

I say we plan a pot luck for Saturday night. Adjust the details the next few weeks on the hikes and what want to see I put up several short hike options . The Lone Pine waterfall ( this is short but steep on the way back up.)

For another hike/ climb up the ridge above the Portal Road, this is very steep but you look into the Portal .

And then the ribbon cutting........

This sounds interesting, but why all the cryptic descriptions? What is this shindig? Is the public invited, or a private event?

I don't think it's intended to be cryptic. Just, as yet, not completely formed. There've been a couple Whitney Portal Store shindigs that I've been to over the years, and they sort of come together in an informal way. You kind of just have to stay posted to the board, and see what unfolds. But I'm betting on a hike through the Alabama Hills on the new trail on Saturday. I've always felt welcome, and I think anybody who enjoys the mountains, and the east side, is welcome.

Alrighty, some more details are coming through....

Will probably meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday (11/12) at a place TBD. Ribbon cutting, hike/work, then lunch. Then in the afternoon, some combination of Lone Pine waterfall, hike the new trail, and/or climb Rattlesnake Mountain in the Alabama Hills. Hi Public event as Karin hinted we are making the final plans now, Will do a morning hike/work near town, Lunch break then do a long hike in the afternoon. This afternoon hike will start with a short hike to Lone Pine Waterfall, a special place as it was used for a photo on a letterhead for the local that built the Whitney Trail 1900's and a few years later in the Silent Moveie Riders of the Purple Sage.

Then hike the new trail east several miles to the "Real Arch" from the arch down hill and south to Rattlesnake Mountain ,off of Rattlesnake Mountain south and East following a single track trail used by many locals to another Arch and exit onto Tuttle Creek Road.

This will be somewhat of a down hill hike but will do a few climbs off trail , these can be avoided and the group can rejoin on the downhill travel. We will stage several cars along the way so if anyone needs to get back into town they can.

Saturday night isn't planned yet but I may talk with a local band and see what they are up to. Sunday we could do a bike ride if we have rain in the next few weeks since much of the trail is sandy and if not moist hard to ride , Jeff M may want to do some climbing so Sunday is open for many changes , also some like Cerro Gordo that is another option these could break into groups of 5-8 people.

Another idea would be a nice ride down the new Portal road, this would take about 5 minutes but could include a water stop.

And that's about how these things go all are welcome and any thoughts you have please don't be shy, these events are just a fun gathering of many people over the last 30 years and every year we see many new faces. So Join in and share what you would like to see or do.

Dave and I are 'in' for the daytime shenanigans. Excited to see everyone!! Will have jackets, snacks and ... am I forgetting anything?? Btw, what tools should we bring besides shovels/rakes? I do have an old machete that will most likely not be needed but I just like it. smile

The tour bus will have water on board, and Myles will be doing a catered lunch, so no need to stop for those opting to take the ride down. (You just have to eat fast, because with the new road and Maura driving, it's a really short trip...)

So Doug, the usual promo for this shindig? (Hey, if we get Shin to bring a shovel, it can be literal!)
