This man claimed to have caught a six-foot golden trout in Carillon Creek. No one believed him except Gullible Jack.

Can you tell I'm contemplating how he got it in his back pack and back to the Portals. Betsy and I will miss you on the summit for our 50th anniversary but I'm sure you will find something to say on the message board.

That scene looks very familiar... Luncheon of the Portal Party, by Renoir?

Very rare photo -
Jack is not flattening cardboard boxes, and Betsy does not have her satchel of wildflower books

A rare scene indeed… Doug is actually sitting down... Betsy is dressed for winter in the middle of August… Crazy Jack seems subdued as he tries to coax a bee out of his soda can… A man from Buellton is listening and not talking… Meanwhile, Earlene seems to have fallen under the spell of a blind prophet. The end of the world???

I may have ben talking about the really nice retirement party that Doug, Earlene, and the Portal staff put on for me seven years ago, or maybe some of my adventures when I did the entire JMT two years ago, but I always like talking to Doug and Earlene, have seen them every year for the past 16 years.

Though I may have a vision problem, I am not blind, not by any means. If I was, there is no way that I could have done Whitney 15 times, or completed the entire 221 mile John Muir Trail, the last 18 days by myself. A blind person could not navigate the Golden Staircase, the stream crossing at Evolution Meadow, or passes like Glen and Forester. I do not appreciate being called blind, even if the person things it is being done light-heartedly. Thank you.

Thanks for the response, Big Whitney Mike! Over the years I’ve been trying my hardest to offend folks at the Portal in hope of being banned, thus curing me of my obsession with the place. But, until now, everyone has always been overly understanding and tolerant!

I'm offended that Tom is out-offending me.
