I have two questions for experienced High Sierra backcountry folks. I am trying to stich together a route from Horseshoe meadows to South lake TH, which is basically a fusion of parts of SoSHR and SEKI High basin routes with summits of Mts. Langley, Whitney, Russell, Tyndall, Williamson and the short Palisade traverse along the way. Though I have been hiking and climbing in many of these areas for 10 years, there are two sections I am not sure about. So is it realistic/practical to:
1) Take a shortcut from the NW side of Charlotte lake (WL3165) to Gardiner lakes/basin, essentially shooting almost straight up N instead of using the used trail that loops around and passes near Charlotte dome and goes over Gardiner pass?
2) Take a shortcut from Deer Creek meadow (JMT, just below the Golden staircase) to Palisade basin or unnamed lake SE of Potluck pass by going straight up N or NE, following the Glacier creek?

Thanks in advance !

P.S.: I realize this may be more appropriate for High Sierra topix and will post there as well but also wanted to give it a try in this forum.

P.P.S.: Please refrain from replying with anecdotal info if you do not have first hand knowledge of these areas.

Question: What peaks are you planning on tagging between Charlotte & the Palisades or are you just visiting basins after Tyndall?

No peaks planned between Tyndall and Palisades but there are many options available for those who feel that summiting 10 14-neers on one 120-mile unsupported cross-country trip is not enough:)

I thought my question was a legitimate one, not a comment on anyone's prowess or lack thereof. I just wanted to know what peaks/areas you were trying to see in between your points, and what your "fusion" consisted of after Tyndall. Are you jumping on the JMT over Forester or going around and over Harrison? Why not the obvious Glen, is it because you want to go through Gardiner basin? Just a few minor details like that so people can help and post pictures and what-not. Then again, I'm probably just drunk...

Hi Jeff,

The idea is to stay away from JMT as much as possible. A few waypoints are below:

Old Army pass
Mt. Langley
Grabtree pass
Mt. Whitney
Iceberg lake
Mt. Russell
Tulainyo lake
Mt. Williamson
Mt. Tyndall
Junction pass
Charlotte lake
Gardiner lakes
Bench lake
Cartrige pass
Dumbbell lakes
Amphitheater lake
Potluck pass
Palisades
Bishop pass

I can't add much past Baxter Lake area, but that area south is home, First I would avoid Old Army Pass and use a shortcut east of Lake 5 , a little hard to find but exits onto the area just below the summit of Langley, then off Langley drop westerly into Little Soldier Lake , over the small saddle just at the southend of the lake , join a faint use trail to Sky Blue Lake drop down Crabtree Pass to the sand slog back up to trail crest , travel on the west side of the tight ridge , join the Main trail hit Whitney then down the mountaineers Route ( options) either do the normal route up Russell or one of the class 3/4 climbs , off of Russell take the North ridge down to the Wallace drainage.
We had a dream one trip to do the 12,000' contour north of Wallace but found it was much faster dropping down to the JMT. Same with the crosscountry from Baxter Pass across the ridge line back to Kesarge, Take a snack and a buddy, another area it was close to That Day order flowers, what day is the service and color of suit.

One of the search and rescue guys wrote a great book on your trip His Name is Glen Bouabaugh I don't think it in print any longer or this is his correct spelling but some one on the board may have a copy. If I recall it was the Sierra High Route , and he did the crosscountry access route to many of the peaks,If I recall South to North . He wrote the book based on many years doing the routes.

And another book /report I just recalled some modern day climber repeated all the first climbs some years ago following the "first routes and gear used " great read , and hints at how the old school climbers did some amazing things .

Have a blast , another hint when my brother came home one day and said he was building trails I ask Why !

Keep in mind the cross country route up Wright Creek and over Rockwell Pass (see Secor for more info). I have been over the pass many times and it is a very gentle slope from Wright Lakes to the pass and, gentle slope down the backside. This positions you about a mile from Shepherd Pass and just a little elevation gain.

This route cuts off four miles of JMT and a whole lot of elevation climb from Tyndall Creek to Shepherd after descending from the Bighorn Plateau.

think about it.

Dough, many thanks. I like the idea of dropping off to Soldier lakes - this cuts off another few miles of common trail. Will probably stick to Old Army pass on the way up though. The plan is to reach the summit of Whitney on the same day, so the Langley push will be done in the dark.

Paul: That is exactly the plan!
