Wait---you're not talking about the guy who can hang from the rafters with one finger, while flipping burgers with the other hand and make fries with his feet at the same time---all while telling customers that they just closed the mountain and they need to go home immediately, are you????

The new cook is taking the high road ,will devote his skills to create objects out of building material.But offered to fill in if we get in a pinch!Of course we were the last to find out so now we will review the recipes and practice cooking pancakes and hamburgers.

Burt, glad to see you again posting on the WPSMB after an "intermission" of over a year. My daughter and I have put to good use the collection of maps, trail guides and books you gave us. Thanks again.

Jim, l haven't been posting because l haven't had anything to say but l do check the Board most every day. My hiking now is limited to the Mt Wilson trail which is a good workout but sure not very interesting. My limitation is altitude. I tried Icehouse Canyon a couple months ago and hit my ceiling at 6,440.

In recent years Myles and Amy have put up new routes on the pinnacle just south of Keeler. I have only heard Myles refer to it as the Day Needle or the Forgotten Needle. Since the late 1800s it seems it was commonly (="unofficially") called the Day Needle after Professor Day who was on the Langley scientific expedition to the summit of Mt Whitney in 1881. In 1995 the Forgotten Needle was apparently named Crooks Peak after Hulda Crooks by an Act of Congress. Maybe some traditionalists resented the name change. Others might have favored naming it "The Cook's Needle."
I was on the Mt Wilson Trail 10 days ago while visiting Sierra Madre. This trail is a gem, but a bit steeper than the Main Mt Whitney Trail (ave gain 655'/mile versus 570'/mile). Interestingly, the observatories on the top of Mt Whitney and Mt Wilson were built just a few years apart, with some of the same people from the Smithsonian Institution involved in the staffing of both (from the scientific aspect).
For those coming off the Mt Wilson Trail with a thirst, I recommend Lucky Baldwins Delirium Pub and Cafe in Kersting Court for a brew and burger. It is not far from the TH.
The Mt Wilson Trail and Delirium Pub and Cafe are good training for Mt Whitney and the Portal Store as we wait for the snow to melt.
Wishing Burt a strong hiking season in the San Gabriel Mountains (and maybe beyond).

I think they recently doubled the useful life of carbon fiber tanks, so there are a lot out there on ebay, etc that can be re-certified for fill. (Knowing that the useful life is a lot longer than the forced retirement, I picked an expired tank up to fill my airguns. I also had to buy a high-pressure compressor because a certified fill station cannot fill an expired tank. Assuming that the life has been doubled, I could get mine re-certified if i wanted/needed to.) A regulator and "mask" wouldn't be all that expensive either.
It'd be 10+ pounds of extra weight though.
Might get some strange looks on the trails, but if it lets you do what you love to do, who cares...

That's an interesting idea, Richard, but l'll pass. Since l hiked for years with, first, an artificial hip and then later a new knee l can't claim to be purist about technical fixes for physical problems but that seems like a step too far for the Mt Wilson trail.
