It seems like smoke situation has been better last couple of days by Mt Whitney. Again, I have a permit to climb Mt Whitney on Oct 6/7. I would need the NF to re-open and the air quality to be suitable for hiking by then. Coming from east coast and trying to decide to cancel plans for it or not. For people that live out that way, is the smoke improvement more temporary or has there been some fundamental improvement such that I actually have a chance to climb on the 6/7th? any thought on that are welcome

Expnd the maps for your area of interest.

For smoke conditions:

www.purpleair.com

https://fire.airnow.gov/

To find individual fire info:

https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/

The smoke sites let you see how weather systems are directing smoke plumes and how air quality can vary through the day. None of the sensor sites are conveniently located on our favorite trails, but still give the regional picture.

I would plan something else while you have time. Your permit will almost surely be canceled this week. The smoke is only one aspect. The forests throughout the state are closed primarily because of lack of resources, and when the next fires break out (which is going to happen---temps are forecast in the 90s+ for another week), time isn't wasted trying to search for/rescue hikers before attempting to fight the fire or letting it burn. If you were flying to Vegas and then driving to Lone Pine, do Mt. Charleston instead and hike around Red Rocks. If you were flying to L.A. turn it into a beach trip---it's still summer and the water is warm, and the heat will be around, as noted.

Heard through the back door that Inyo NF will remain closed through the 8th now. Info now validated on Inyo NF webpage.

Thank you. Oh boy. 12/1/20. Does anyone know if Long Lake and Duse Basin is part of the closure? How about hiking trails in Yosemite? Just trying to go on a last backpacking trip before it’s too cild.
Thank you in advance

In 1995, a friend asked me when climbing season was. I thought for a moment and replied, “Last year, I climbed my first 14er on January 1st, and I climbed my last 14er on December 31st.” Climbing season never ends.

According to Angeles national Forest office in Arcadia this morning, they will make an decision tomorrow.
Let's hope all the national forests, locally 4 national forests, open very soon.

This is only a rumor, but I've heard it whispered that a new day will dawn for those who stand long, and the forests will echo with laughter.

Even though parts of Inyo reopened there is still a hard closure at the boundary of the John Muir Wilderness so places like Long Lake and Dusy Basin are off limits. This essentially means you can go a mile or two up some of the main trails here on the east side until you get to the JM Wilderness sign/boundary.

The main problem is that there are still rings of smoke through the trees, not to mention the voices of those who stand looking.
